Chicago Cubs Lineup: No Matt Shaw or Owen Caissie

CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs came through with a win last night on the strength of homers off the bats of BOTH Kyle Tucker and Pete Crow-Armstrong. Now, we just have to hope that helps them shake off the rust and go on an insane tear through October. Is that really so much to ask? Oh, by the way, Pete Crow-Armstrong is just two homers away from joining Sammy Sosa as the second Cub ever in the 30-30 club. I think he should just do it tonight and get it over with.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Michael Busch, 1B Kyle Tucker, RF Seiya Suzuki, DH Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Ian Happ, LF Nico Hoerner, 2B Willi Castro, 3B Dansby Swanson, SS Reese McGuire, C

For the most part, this is a normal Cubs lineup versus right-handed batters, with Michael Busch leading off, Pete Crow-Armstrong batting cleanup, and Reese McGuire behind the plate.

But I suspect a lot of you will be upset to learn that Willi Castro is at third base instead of Matt Shaw, presumably because of the platoon advantage Castro offers against Mederos. And perhaps that’s a reasonable plan, but we also aren’t getting Owen Caissie, a lefty, and that kinda makes it sting more.

But, hey, Kyle Tucker homered last night, so he’s definitely fixed, right? And Seiya Suzuki, who has two hits (both singles) in his last seven games, couldn’t use a day off, obviously.

I swear I’m not a “play Owen Caissie at all costs” guy, but it does seem odd to take a scorching hot top prospect out of Triple-A, watch him contribute in his limited chances, and then just continue to not use him while other players are struggling. Oh well. Go Cubs.

    Los Angeles Angels Lineup:

Zach Neto, SS Nolan Schanuel, 1B Mike Trout, DH Taylor Ward, LF Yoan Moncada, 3B Jo Adell, RF Luis Rengifo, 2B Logan O’Hoppe, C Bryce Teodosio, CF

    Pitching Matchup:

    Chicago Cubs: Cade Horton, RHP

You know the story. Cade Horton had gone on an incredible scoreless streak before finally giving up just one earned run (after he left the game, no less) against the Blue Jays in Toronto. But then, unfortunately, in his next outing this past week against the Brewers, Horton had to leave after just 2.2 IP because of a blister.

We weren’t sure if he was going to make this start tonight, but maybe the Cubs acted quickly enough to help that heal. I always worry about pushing pitchers too soon after a blister, because it’s one of those problems that really only goes away by leaving it alone and letting it callous over. And if you try to pitch through it, the problem can get worse AND you might not have your best command.

Los Angeles Angels: Victor Mederos, RHP

Victor Mederos had been a guy who threw his four-seamer in that 97-98 MPH range before this season, but it seems he’s abandoned that pitch entirely, swapping it out for a 94-95 MPH sinker (as well as many more sliders). In fact, those are pretty much the only two pitches he’s throwing this year, with just the occasional changeup to keep batters honest.

However, it hasn’t really worked too well just yet in the big leagues, in large part because he is an INCREDIBLY wild pitcher at the top level: 17.9% walk rate. That’s like Tyler Chatwood at his worst.

But he doesn’t seem to have that issue in the minors, where his walk rate has ranged from 8-11%, albeit still without many strikeouts. So I’m not entirely sure what to expect tonight, but I wouldn’t be surprised if patience was the name of the game for Cubs hitters.
