First responders in Highland Park are searching for a missing swimmer who was last seen in the water near Openlands Lakeshore Preserve at Fort Sheridan, authorities said Saturday afternoon.
At approximately 12 p.m., the Highland Park fire and police departments were called to the forest preserve along Lake Michigan for the report of a distressed swimmer struggling in the water, city officials said in a news release.
A bystander tried to help the swimmer but wasn’t able to due to the lake’s strong currents. The Highland Park Fire Department deployed its water rescue team in the swimmer’s last identified location, while police were utilizing a drone to assist with the search, officials said.
A member of the dive team was briefly reported missing during the search but was later located uninjured, officials said. The public was asked to avoid the area as search efforts remained underway.
Authorities said they expect to provide an update later Saturday.
