Austin Booker is Going to Miss Some Time With an Injury

The Chicago Bears might be in the market for some pass rush help.

Austin Booker is expected to miss some time due to an injury. Booker did not play at all in Friday’s preseason win against the Kansas City Chiefs. There was some hope that the injury that took him out of the team’s Week 2 preseason triumph against the Buffalo Bills wasn’t going to be a long-term issue. Unfortunately, the update Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson shared with reporters (via the Trib’s Sean Hammond on Twitter/X) was that Booker will be out “a few weeks” because of the knee injury. What a bummer.

What’s next for the Bears if Austin Booker’s absence is a prolonged one?

The Austin Booker show was fun to watch this preseason. A second-year player who played his college ball at Kansas, Booker collected 4 sacks and 4 tackles-for-loss in two games. It was looking like the KU product was lined up to get the DE3 job that would have put him in a rotation as an edge rusher on snaps in which versatile defensive lineman Dayo Odeyingbo would move to the interior. But Booker’s injury throws a wrench in those plans, and I’m not quite sure what the best plan of attack is moving forward.

I suppose someone like fourth-year defensive end Dominique Robinson could be in play. But the Day 3 pick from General Manager Ryan Poles’ first draft class hasn’t done much with his reps in Chicago and is firmly on the roster bubble. Maybe Shemar Turner gets in on the action in some capacity. That might be ideal, but he still needs to catch up after missing time at training camp with an injury of his own. Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen is one of the best in the business, so I am curious to see what he dials up in the 16 days between now and when Chicago’s Monday Night Football showdown against the Minnesota Vikings kicks off.

For what it’s worth, edge defenders such as Za’Darius Smith and Jadeveon Clowney are still hanging around on the free-agent wire. Matthew Judon, a rumored Bears target in recent years, signed with a team last week. Roster cuts are due by 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday. The Bears might be better off waiting out the market and seeing which players slip through the cracks and land on waivers. Even if the team snags a nice player, it still stings to see Austin Booker, who appeared to be making developmental progress, get sidelined because of a preseason injury.
