The fall high school sports season is just getting underway.
Local teams, in a variety of sports, have already begun to make an impression upon statewide prognosticators.
Perhaps reflecting a rare, recent trend — a local team hasn’t won a state football title in nearly three years — not a single local football program tops its respective classification in CHSAA’s statewide preseason coaches polls.
Nonetheless, numerous local teams don’t sit very far off the top of their sets of rankings.
Windsor is ranked second in Class 3A behind Pomona. The Wizards lost to the Panthers in the second round of the state tournament a year ago.
Windsor went 10-2 a season ago.

Eaton (7-5) is third in 2A behind Wellington and The Classical Academy.
The Reds lost to Wellington 45-14 in the state semifinals a season ago. The Eagles went on to lose to Classical Academy 42-36 in the state finals a week later.
Eaton will certainly challenge itself during a regular season schedule that opens with a home game against TCA at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 and includes a road matchup against league foe Wellington on Oct. 17.
Another top 10 preseason pick the Reds will face — Resurrection Christian — ranked ninth in the preseason poll. Eaton and the Cougars clash Oct. 10.

These two teams will face each other in both teams’ regular season finale, Oct. 31 in Ault. That game certainly could have major 1A Central League title ramifications.
Dayspring Christian has struggled just a bit, by its own high standards, in recent years. But the Eagles still garner plenty of statewide respect. They come into the season ranked ninth in the 1A 8-man poll after going 4-6 and qualifying for the playoffs a season ago.
All-around recognition
Football certainly isn’t the only fall sport in which local programs sit prominently within statewide preseason rankings.
Most notably, local teams are aplenty in CHSAA’s girls volleyball preseason polls.
Perennial contender Windsor comes into the season as the team to beat in 4A. The Wizards are ranked first, just ahead of No. 2 Lewis-Palmer and No. 3 University. The Wizards (21-10 a year ago) were a state finalist this past season.

Both teams were semifinalists a season ago. The Reds have won seven 3A state titles in the past 14 years.
Platte Valley, this past year’s state runner-up, is fifth in 3A. Briggsdale and Prairie are ranked seventh and eighth, respectively, in 1A.
Eaton (26-3 a year ago) is the top-ranked team in the 3A softball poll. The Reds have won four of the past five state titles, including the previous three. Fellow perennial contender University is second in the 3A rankings.
Windsor is ranked second behind Lutheran, while Severance is ninth, in the 4A softball poll.
Upstart Roosevelt is the second-ranked team behind Niwot in the 4A gymnastics poll. The Rough Riders launched their program just four years ago.
Windsor is third in 4A, while Resurrection Christian is second and Frontier Academy is 10th, respectively, in 2A in boys golf.

Volleyball standout Aliya McClanahan hasn’t slowed down a bit since playing for Dayspring Christian Academy in 2019-22.
McClanahan, a 5-foot-11 middle hitter, was recently named to the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference’s preseason team heading into her junior season with Sterling College, an NAIA program in Sterling, Kansas.
A season ago, McClanahan was an All-KCAC second-team selection and a NCCAA All-American second team honoree, recording team-highs of 280 kills and 97 total blocks, in 28 matches.

Greeley West will host a series of boys tennis tournaments this fall.
Perhaps most notably, the Spartans will play host to the annual Greeley West Tennis Invitational Aug. 29-30. It is one of the biggest and most competitive tournaments in the state.
During that tournament, West will hand out the John Haefeli Sportsmanship Award to a deserving recipient.
Haefeli, a longtime coach, education and community advocate who died this summer, was one of the strongest proponents and contributors for the local tennis scene.
The Spartans are hosting the Greeley Tennis Tournament — featuring West, Greeley Central, Northridge and University — this weekend.
On Sept. 25, the Spartans will host the 5A Northern Conference Championships.
