Nazar Talks Contract and Confidence, Frondell Scores, Cap Minutiae, Future UFAs, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Frank Nazar spoke with the media yesterday about signing his new contract with the Blackhawks. He told us he’s taken a lot away from his summer skates with the likes of Patrick Kane and looks forward to the confidence boost he got from playing so well at the IIHF Men’s World Championship earlier in the summer. Confidence has never been a question with Nazar; he said he wants to be the best on the ice every night. And the new contract won’t change that in any way.

And locking himself in with the Blackhawks for eight more years (including the 2025-26 season to finish his ELC) was a no-brainer.

“To look at it in the long run and see that I could be in Chicago for seven years, playing with the team of my dreams, in the city that I want to be at and a crew I want to be with… it was an easy decision at the end.”

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) August 22, 2025 When asked what a big takeaway was from his rookie season, he chuckled and said “finish more breakaways.” He’s focused on making his opportunities count. He certainly did that in his first pro season. Nazar said he has not talked business with Connor Bedard. But he has watched a lot of his training clips on social media. Bedard, like Nazar, can sign an extension at any time now. There is zero concern that Bedard won’t sign. None whatsoever. I say this because I already know from some of the stupidity I saw on Twitter yesterday that there are folks out there who are going to take that comment from Nazar waaaaaaaaaaay out of context. There is no concern. Speaking of finishing, here’s a pretty goal from Anton Frondell in action with Djurgårdens on Friday.

    — SwehockeyGIFs (@swehockeygifs) August 22, 2025 No updates on Wyatt Kaiser still. Interesting international nugget here from Darren Dreger. The NHL is not going to work with the IIHF on the World Cup in 2028. I wonder if it has anything to do with the IIHF having control over which countries are/are not included in that tournament.

At this point, it appears the NHL will move forward with World Cup preparations without IIHF involvement. The league has informed the IIHF it intends on working directly with each Hockey Federation in planning the 2028 event.

    — Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) August 22, 2025 A couple mailbag pieces this week got my attention for different reasons. James Mirtle at The Athletic shared one that had an outstanding discussion of how cap accrual works in the NHL and how that’s evolving in the NHL with the cap going up as much as it is. LTIR has been a hot topic in recent years with teams like Florida and Vegas weaponizing it to add quality late in the season and then (surprise!) having star players return in the postseason. That will change in the new CBA, as will a few other nuances to how accrual works. Here’s part of what Mirtle wrote about how the cap going up is changing how cap space is going to be leveraged:

The challenge in this environment right now is that if everyone has cap space, it becomes a less valuable asset. Plus, the real assets a team like Toronto will want at the deadline — good players — are scarce. I think we could theoretically see some weird things like contending teams with a lot of cap space (the Carolina Hurricanes?) taking on bad money in a deal just to increase the likelihood they get the deadline acquisition they want. Absorbing cap dumps may no longer be only the domain of the rebuilders.

All of this is to say that cap space is going to be less of a barrier than ever for a lot of teams, and this could be an advantage for Detroit, Carolina, the Ottawa Senators, the Winnipeg Jets, Toronto and maybe a few other plausible playoff teams come the deadline. They won’t necessarily need retention to get deals done, and they won’t have to worry about sending salaries back the other way.

The bigger challenge will be finding the right talent to use that cash on and outbidding all the other teams with plenty of money to spend.

    — The Athletic NHL (@TheAthleticNHL) August 21, 2025 With Mirtle’s comments as background, Anthony DiMarco’s mailbag at Daily Faceoff includes an intriguing question that comes up frequently in this space with Blackhawks fans: what is the future of the UFA market? DiMarco was asked which top-tier UFAs he sees actually hitting the open market. He brings up Jack Eichel in Vegas and Kirill Kaprizov in Minnesota as a couple guys who are at least intriguing to him because of where their respective franchises are at financially and in their timeline. He does caveat that he thinks both of their current teams will do whatever they can to keep those two specific players, but the opportunity for either to set the market at their respective positions at least gives him pause. I continue to downplay the UFA market as the cure-all for the Blackhawks looking for a significant impact player because guys like Connor McDavid leaving their current team with cap space going up makes that less likely because, well, it won’t be as necessary to strip depth around star players. But there will still be players and agents who want to at least test the open market and potentially raise the ceiling for their position. Good comments from DiMarco here.

NHL MAILBAG: ? Which top 2026 UFAs could actually go to market?? Breakout and bounce-back goalie picks for 2025-26? Hellebuyck vs. Oettinger as USA Olympic starter& more from @ADiMarco25: t.co/bnROmaf2Am

    — Daily Faceoff (@DailyFaceoff) August 21, 2025 One piece of news that likely could have influenced DiMarco’s thoughts came after he posted his piece. The Minnesota Wild are reportedly signing Marco Rossi to a bridge deal for three years with a $5M AAV. A bridge deal there likely helps the Wild look out 12 months with Rossi having a lower AAV, keeping valuable cap space available for their biggest ticket player. But, again, we’ll see how things go there.

Marco Rossi’s deal will carry a $5 million AAV. $4 million, $5 million, $6 million, so his QO heading into his unrestricted year will be $6 million

The Bears came all the way back and won in KC last night, thanks to a huge rally led by Tyson Bagent. The Cubs also won last night — and Kyle Tucker actually hit a ball in the air (it was a home run)! Ayo Dosunmu was back at THE University of Illinois this week looking good (and healthy).
