PEMBROKE, N.Y. – Five people were killed in a bus crash on the Thruway in Pembroke, Genesee County. First responders worked to save lives at the scene.
“We had a real good turnout today. We were able to get these people out and into a hospital,” said Ed Mileham, assistant fire chief for Pembroke.
Several passengers from around the world, including India, China and the Philippines, were transported to local hospitals. Doctors from Buffalo triaged patients at the scene, sending the 24 most seriously injured to Buffalo.
“I’ve been here 25 years and as Peter has mentioned I’m also a member of the department of emergency medicine. This is probably the most trauma patients we’ve had from one incident in my career,” said an Erie County Medical Center doctor.
Mileham described the scene upon his arrival. “50-60 people within the area that were there that helped to get these people taken care of and get them triaged so that when the ambulance got there they could load them up and go. We had 4 mercy flights come in and we landed them in the middle of the Thruway,” he said.
Mileham, an EMT since 1983, said he had never seen a bus crash this severe. “It’s probably the first time since 1983 that I’ve had this many people injured at one point at one time,” he said.
Fire departments that responded to the crash site planned to debrief on the response Monday evening, Mileham said.
