(KRON) -- A father was arrested for the death of his 5-month-old infant, the San Jose Police Department announced Friday.
On the afternoon of Nov. 3, 2024, police officers were called to an apartment at The Woods, a large apartment complex at 4500 The Woods Drive. The baby boy, who was not conscious or breathing, was rushed from the apartment to a hospital, police said.
Six days later, the infant was pronounced deceased. Homicide detectives launched an investigation and the father, 27-year-old Julian Morgan Matias Taylor, was identified as a child abuse suspect.
Julian Morgan Matias Taylor is seen in an August 2025 mugshot released by SJPD.Detectives were notified by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner last month that the baby's cause of death was multiple traumatic injuries. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.
On Monday, police found Taylor in the city of Palmdale and arrested him. Taylor was transported back to San Jose and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail. Prosecutors charged the father with assault on a child likely to produce great bodily injury resulting in death, court records show.
A coroner determined that the baby had suffered a "severe traumatic brain injury," and his injuries "were consistent with abusive head trauma," court records show.
Taylor's statements to police about what happened to his son did not match up to his son's injuries, SJPD detective Christina Jize wrote in a police report.
During his interviews with police, Taylor said his fiancé went out shopping and he was home alone with their infant on Nov. 3, 2024. Taylor said he was playing video games, and while he stepped away for a moment to use the bathroom, the baby was injured by falling.
"He reported the victim fell off a small couch while swaddled in a blanket and strapped in a bouncy chair while he left the room to use the bathroom. He found the victim face down on the floor with the bouncy chair on top of him," Jize wrote in the police report.
"Julian Taylor stated he brought the victim to his (mother-in-law's) house, who is a registered nurse, and believed the victim was fine after checking him," Jize wrote.
After the father and son returned home, Taylor's fiancé also returned home with groceries. "Taylor stated he carried the (baby) in his car seat, along with groceries, up to the apartment. Once upstairs, he noticed the victim was not breathing, and had his fiancé call 911 while he performed CPR," the detective wrote.
Gilroy woman who owned daycare arrested for child molestationTaylor told detectives that he didn't see any injuries. The fiancé told police that she noticed her baby had bruising under his eyes and immediately knew something was wrong. She also said her son was "normal and fine" when she left their apartment to go shopping.
The 5-month-old victim's autopsy and medical records showed that he had factures in different stages of healing, and he experienced non-accidental trauma. "I believe the injuries sustained by (the baby) were intentional acts by suspect Julian Taylor," the detective wrote.
