Champaign will always be a second home for Ayo Dosunmu.

The Chicago Bulls guard shocked the college basketball world when he accepted an offer to suit up for the Fighting Illini. Dosunmu was a five-star prospect and a Top 100 ESPN recruit who had offers from a slew of more recently successful schools. Instead, he chose to play for his home state and work alongside new head coach Brad Underwood in rebuilding the once-respected program.

The rest is quite literally history.

By the time Dosunmu left Illinois after his junior year, the school was back at the top of the Big Ten. They took home their first conference title since 2005 and appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in eight years. While Dosunmu’s storybook career would continue when he was drafted by his hometown Chicago Bulls, his impact on Illini basketball is felt to this day.

Illinois has not missed the NCAA Tournament since Dosunmu turned pro. The program has become one of the most consistently competitive in college basketball, and they have continued to turn out NBA-caliber talent along the way. Most recently, the Illini had Kasparas Jakucionis and Will Riley hear their names called in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft.

When you mean this much to a team, the bond will never be broken. That’s why it came as no surprise to see Dosunmu spend some of his offseason back at his old stomping grounds. The Illini men’s basketball team recently posted a video that shows the 25-year-old guard putting in work at their recently renovated facility. Dosunmu gushes about the program’s updated digs, as well as about the strength and conditioning coach, Adam Fletcher. Dosunmu touts “Fletch” for helping keep his body right even after his NCAA playing days.

Speaking of which, there has never been a more important offseason for Dosunmu to focus on his recovery. The guard played a season-low 46 games during the 2024-25 campaign due to a season-ending shoulder surgery. Dounsmu has now been tasked with rehabbing a serious injury for the first time in his career. So, no wonder he wanted to fetch some help from the man who helped get him to where he is today!

All things considered, the video posted by the Illini shows Dosunmu looking pretty darn healthy. This is easily the most we have seen him do in the gym since the injury news dropped, and you can’t ask for much more with training camp set to start in a little over a month.

Not only is it great to see Dosunmu moving so well, but it’s great to see how happy he is to be back in familiar territory. All eyes will now turn to the voluntary workouts, which are supposed to begin in Chicago next week, according to K.C. Johnson of CHSN.

Will Dosunmu be a full go? If so, can we expect him to pick up where he left off last season, when he was posting career-high numbers? The Bulls are sure banking on it!
