Evacuation orders issued as Pickett Fire rages near Calistoga

CALISTOGA, Calif. (KRON) -- Several crews spanning across multiple agencies continued working overnight at the site of a vegetation fire near Calistoga that jumped to 2,133 acres by Friday morning, according to Cal Fire.

There is zero containment on the Napa County blaze that officials have dubbed the Pickett Fire.

    Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for four zones (colored red in the map below), and six zones are under an evacuation warning (colored yellow).

    Evacuees needing overnight shelter are asked to go to Crosswalk Community Church at 2590 First St. in Napa.

    The fire was first reported just before 3:30 p.m. Thursday near the 2300 block of Pickett Road. Authorities said it had a "moderate rate of speed," and was moving in the southeast direction into the night.

    Cal Fire's operation on Friday will include 435 personnel with an expanded 75 engines, eight hand crews, 15 dozers, 10 water tenders and "numerous" tankers and helicopters, according to fire officials.

    Overnight between Thursday and Friday, 53 engines, eight hand crews, eight dozers, four water tenders and three helicopters with night flying capabilities continued to work the fire.

    The origin and cause of the fire have not yet been determined. There is no word that nearby structures or homes are threatened.

    The Bay Area Air District has issued an air quality advisory due to wildfire smoke from the Pickett Fire through Friday, Aug. 22.

    "Smoke from the Pickett Fire in Napa County is expected to impact Sonoma, Napa and Solano counties on Thursday and Friday," said Bay Area Air District in a news release on Thursday afternoon. "Conditions can change rapidly and the amount and location of smoke at ground level is hard to predict. Smoky, hazy skies may be visible, and the smell of smoke is possible."

    Those traveling in the area are urged to use caution. There are no reports of injuries so far.
