ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Advocates rallied on the steps of Rochester City Hall Thursday, calling for the passing of a sanctuary city ordinance.
The rally aimed to secure stronger protections for immigrants, the LGBTQ community, and the homeless.
Organizers emphasized the city’s role in providing more places for people to live and get back on their feet, rather than sweeping them off the street.
“You know, provide people with safe, sanctioned place to be, connect them with resources to support them,” said Mary Rutigliano of the Rochester Rapid Response Newtwork. “Instead of just displacing people and throwing away their things, this would create, you know, a safer, you know, more centralized place to be.”
The protest followed recent encampment sweeps on North Clinton Avenue that displaced around 50 people, organizers said.
