SALISBURY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A family in Salisbury says the puppy they bought from a Charlotte pet store that has since shut down has been sick.
Queen City News Anchor Robin Kanady also uncovered that this isn’t the first time the pet store’s owner has had problems.
'They all looked happy'
Bella Rose was a gift.
“She was an early birthday present for me,” said the dog’s owner, Teresa Waldo.
Waldo needed a friend after moving to Salisbury from Oklahoma with her husband.
“They showed pictures, they looked all happy and healthy with their bow ties on,” Waldo said of the pictures she saw of Bella Rose before she bought the dog.
Waldo found Bella Rose online and traveled to Happy Puppy Universe in Charlotte to pick up the pup in early July.
“There was no big warning signs of anything wrong,” said Waldo.
Two weeks later, Bella Rose had a little cough.
A month and a half later after multiple vet visits and medications, it only seems to be getting worse.
“Last night it was pretty bad, she was wheezing and coughing and dry heaving,” said Waldo.
And the neighbor’s dog got sick.
Waldo’s neighbor dog-sat Bella Rose. He also has a dog, the two dogs played together, and now Waldo is worried that Bella Rose got the neighbor's dog sick.
“So of course I feel horrible about it,” said Waldo.
Last week the North Carolina Department of Agriculture shut down Happy Puppy Universe on University City Boulevard after inspectors say 11 dogs died.
QCN found out the business owner, Lawrence Master, has been in trouble before.
The owner of Happy Puppy Universe also had a business shut down in Clearwater, Florida.His pet shop, Blue Sky Puppies in Clearwater, Florida, was also shut down last month.
Officials said the business turned in dozens of dead puppies for cremation and didn’t tell authorities in Pinellas County.
“I don’t want anything to happen to her, you know?” Waldo said emotionally.
She’s still waiting on test results to find out if Bella Rose will be OK.
“It’s sad, it’s just sad that this baby has to hurt because somebody else that was supposed to be taking care of her didn’t, they just didn’t.”
