Grey's Anatomy star Debbie Allen mourned a devastating family loss following the death of her mother, Vivian Ayers, at 102.
On Thursday, Aug. 21, the actress, 75, took to Instagram to announce the death of her mother. Allen is also known for her work in Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, A Different World and the musical drama Fame.

"Mommie you have transformed into that cosmic bird Hawk that lives and breathes Freedom," Allen captioned her update. "We will follow your trail of golden dust and continue to climb higher. We promise 'to be true, be beautiful, be Free.'"

Ayers wrote Hawk in 1957, too.
Ayers was also the mother of actress Phylicia Rashad, who is known for portraying Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show. Rashad, 77, also appeared in This Is Us and Empire, in addition to the Broadway shows Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, August: Osage County and Gem of the Ocean.
“It was my mother who taught us choral speech; it was my mother who taught us to tumble across the living room floor,” Rashad told NPR in 2010. “It was my mother who gave us a real appreciation for art and literature as living things, not just as something hung on the wall or placed on the shelf — an appreciation for ideas and the power of thought and human intention. My mother gave us a lot — she gave us everything.”
In addition to Allen and Rashad, Ayers shared two sons, Hugh Allen and Andrew Arthur "Tex" Allen Jr., with the late Andrew Allen.
