Members of California’s GOP railed against Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to put a redistricting plan before voters on Thursday morning, calling it a “partisan power grab” and a threat to the voter-approved independent redistricting process.
“The corruption must end,” said San Diego Republican Carl DeMaio at a press conference from Sacramento ahead of a vote on the redistricting plan.
“I don’t have as much hope in my colleagues across the aisle waking up and doing the right thing and upholding their oath to fulfill the Constitution.”
California lawmakers were looking at Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to ask voters to gerrymander the state’s congressional districts, solidifying his response to Trump’s effort to get more GOP seats out of Texas a day after that state passed its own new maps.
The California maps would offset the Texas maps by tilting five Republican-held congressional districts toward Democrats.
“I haven’t heard a single Republican in the state of California, who’s in office in the state Legislature, defend Texas,” said Assemblymember DeMaio, an unabashed Trump supporter.
“Gerrymandering is wrong no matter who’s doing it, whether it’s done by a red state or a blue state. Politicians manipulating the lines of their districts, it’s wrong.”
DeMaio, along with Assembly Minority Leader James Gallagher, on Monday introduced a resolution calling on Congress to propose a constitutional amendment requiring all states to use a nonpartisan commission for redistricting, as California has required since voters passed a ballot measure creating that process in 2010.
All GOP Assemblymembers have signed on.
“When does it stop?” asked Sen. Tony Strickland, a Huntington Beach Republican, who warned that a gerrymandering race to the bottom would result in a “destructive country” and “chaos” by encouraging redistricting every two years.
Instead, he said all states should adopt California’s model, where maps are drawn every ten years by an independent citizens redistricting commission.
“What we have currently right now should be the model and the gold standard for the rest of the country to follow,” he said.
The press conference came as a judge approved a gerrymandering plan spearheaded by and intending to give more power to Republicans in Texas.
