Bears vs Chiefs Preview: One Last Teaser

The Chicago Bears are off today after finishing their final padded training camp practice on Wednesday at Halas Hall. They will be in Kansas City on Friday for the preseason finale, and just like that, we’re right around the corner from the start of the regular season.

Every season arrives with anticipation for Bears fans. Chicago is a Bears town, after all. For five-plus months, our Sunday sanity hinges on the success of the Monsters of the Midway, moving this city like no other team or sport can. But this season feels a little more high-stakes.

The Bears landed the quarterback with the No. 1 overall selection in the NFL Draft last year. This year, they paired him with the (overwhelming) consensus top head coaching candidate on the market for multiple coaching cycles. Chicago also has, arguably, the most talented—and deep—group of offensive weapons they’ve ever had in the same building at once.

Even if realistic expectations don’t involve a Lombardi, this group had better establish itself as a contender in the coming years for one. Otherwise, all of this was a failure, and we’re back to the drawing board. Friday’s contest with the Chiefs at Arrowhead will feature the starters of an NFC hopeful versus the starters of a modern-day Goliath for some time. It will only be a teaser, and it won’t necessarily make or break anything beyond Friday, but I can’t help but feel like it’s more important than it actually is.

Head Coaches Andy Reid and Ben Johnson confirmed their starters will play at Arrowhead on Friday night, and we’ll be looking for a repeat performance from Caleb Williams and Chicago’s first team offense on the road against the reigning AFC champions, for however long they’re in the game.

    Three Bears

Every week, our Chicago Bears writers will give you their Bears player to watch in the matchup ahead. Three Bears is a staple of these previews, and with Bears coverage expanding this season, I thought it would be cool to involve all of the Bears thinkers in the exercise.

Matt Rooney: Braxton Jones — If the Bears’ offensive line is going to reach its ceiling, it will have to be with Jones looking like his old self. He hasn’t looked awful in the preseason, but it does seem like he still might not fully trust that foot, and his struggles with inside moves in the preseason would suggest the same. Let’s hope he keeps ramping up toward the best version of himself and wins that job, because I think it’s the best-case scenario for the current OL room.

Luis Medina: Austin Reed — With Caleb Williams likely to be limited to a handful of snaps and Tyson Bagent getting a nifty contract extension, the quarterback with the most to prove on Friday is Reed. The second-year quarterback is the type of player who can make a play late in a game that makes preseason football worth watching.

Patrick Flowers: Caleb Williams — I loved what I saw from Williams in limited action last week, from a pre-snap operational standpoint and a post-snap operation and process. Everything was clean and fluid, the footwork and timing were solid, and save for one or two passes, the throws were on the money. Williams has to take a step forward this season, and seeing him check the operational boxes and work in structure and on time will be critical. I want to see it again on Friday, even if only for a few drives.
