Just over two years after Northwestern dismissed long-time head coach Pat Fitzgerald after allegations of hazing within his program, the two sides have agreed on a settlement in the ongoing lawsuit Fitzgerald filed against the university. While the terms of that settlement were not revealed by either party, the statement put out by Northwestern seemed to be favorable toward the former Northwestern head coach and linebacker.

Northwestern & Pat Fitzgerald Settle Lawsuit
In Northwestern’s statement, they didn’t necessarily absolve Pat Fitzgerald of all wrongdoing, but they did admit that discovery did not establish that any hazing was reported to the then-head coach:
“The evidence uncovered during extensive discovery did not establish that any player reported hazing to Coach Fitzgerald or that Coach Fitzgerald condoned or directed any hazing. Moreover, when presented with the details of the conduct, he was incredibly upset and saddened by the negative impact this conduct had on players within the program.”
So, essentially, Northwestern didn’t go as far as to say they concluded Fitz didn’t know anything, but they were able to acknowledge that nothing was brought to him regarding the hazing.
Fitzgerald did release a statement of his own as well regarding the settlement.

— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) August 21, 2025In the end, we’ll probably never know the full story. While one can acknowledge that whether or not Fitz knew anything, as the head coach in charge, it was his job to know everything going on in his program. Having said that, if what Northwestern said in their statement is true, one could argue the university went too far in dismissing Coach Fitzgerald after conducting an investigation and deemeing a suspension was the correct punishment.
Pat Fitzgerald has not coached in college football since his dismissal from Northwestern, though now with the lawsuit cleared up I would not be stunned to see him get either defensive coordinator or head coach looks with the legal proceedings behind him.
