Chicago Museum of Broadcast Communications announces comeback with 2 nostalgic exhibits

A popular Chicago museum that shuttered in 2023 after more than 40 years is officially reopening in a new way with two major exhibits that date back decades.

The Chicago Museum of Broadcast Communications will open its doors this fall in a new pop-up location, the release said, with exhibits honoring the “King of Late Night” Johnny Carson, a release said, along with a separate section depicting “The Evolution of Late Night Television.”

According to the release, the pop-up museum will be located at 440 W. Randolph St. near Millennium Park. It will open to the public Oct. 24, a day after what would have been Carson’s 100th birthday.

“Johnny Carson was more than a host—he was a national institution whose humor and curiosity united Americans for three decades,” David Plier, chairman, president, and CEO of the Museum said in the release. “This exhibit is a rare opportunity to celebrate a career that helped shape American culture.”

“Johnny Carson: The Centennial Exhibit: will include rare artifacts from the museum’s collection, the release said, as well as items on loan from the Johnny Carson Gallery at the Elkhorn Valley Museum in Norfolk, Nebraska.

Portions of Carson’s original curtain will also be on display, the release said, and a replica of his iconic stage entrance and stage will be available for guests to snap photos with.

The “Journey Through 75 Years of Late-Night” portion will walk guests through different hosts through the years, ranging from Steve Allen and Jack Paar to David Letterman, Arsenio Hall, Joan Rivers, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien and more.

The exhibits come at a “pivotal” moment for late-night television, the release said. Earlier this summer, CBS announced it was canceling “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert.

“These exhibits aim to spark conversation on the past, present, and future of a uniquely American art form,” the release said.

According to organizers, the pop-up museum will remain open to guests through January 2027. The museum originally opened in 1982.
