Matt Shaw Plays Hero for a Night, Hero for a Half

What a night for Matt Shaw. His 11-pitch walk helped set up the huge Michael Busch double. His barehanded play may have ultimately saved a run or more. And his home run wound up the difference in the game.

It’s not a stretch to say that Shaw, who has been the Cubs’ best hitter since the All-Star break, was the hero of that game (with a special mention to Busch, of course, who hit that double and scooped on that barehanded play).

All of it reminds me that I cannot say enough how fortunate the Cubs are that a trade for Eugenio Suarez didn’t work out. For all we know, Suarez getting hit by that pitch right before the deadline created just enough uncertainty that the Cubs wouldn’t pull the trigger. Thank you, Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest?

On the season, Matt Shaw is now hitting .229/.295/.410/97 wRC+, which is pretty incredible given where he started. Heck, even if you only shave off the two Japan games, he’s been an above-average overall hitter this year as a rookie. So that’s fun.

The second half, of course, is doing the heavy lifting there, as Shaw has been an absolute beast: .302/.344/.721/189 wRC+ over 93 PAs with impeccable peripherals. I won’t say it was as simple as getting him to pull the ball in the air, but he’s definitely been doing a whole lot of that with a whole lot of success to show for it.

Also, he leads the Cubs in basically everything in the second half.
