ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe County is joining a lawsuit that seeks to stop the federal government from withholding funding over Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies.
The county is accusing the Trump administration of unlawfully threatening to withhold funding for infrastructure improvements at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport. The administration is withholding funding because the county has a department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, according to county leaders.
The county has had a department focused on DEI programs since 2020. County Executive Adam Bello said the department has supported programs for local veterans, compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, language access services, and programs for women and minority-owned businesses.
The grant funding that the country says is in jeopardy comes from the Federal Aviation Administration. Other municipalities across the country are also suing the Trump administration over funding cuts. In a statement, the county said jobs are at risk because of the possible elimination of the FAA grant.
