Emergency clinic sees busiest month since grand opening

EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The new emergency veterinary clinic in East Rochester is proving its necessity by treating nearly 1,400 patients in July; the most since it opened in March.

“This is what we’re in it for, you know?” said Bruce Ingersoll, medical director at Rochester Emergency Veterinary Services. “We’re extremely happy to be able to provide, you know, a place local, for people to get that emergency care.

Ingersoll said the facility has been busy non-stop. This was expected since the area was without a 24/7 clinic for more than 18 months. The clinic, located on West Commercial Street, has already treated nearly 5,000 animals. That’s just 3,000 less animals as the old location did all last year while open overnight.

The summer months often see an increase in emergency visits as dogs are outside more, leading to potential accidents or ingestion of harmful items.

“There’s a variety of reasons,” Ingersoll said. “They take them out more, so they’re prone to more accidents. But they also, they’re outside. So dogs like to get into things more.”

Operating 24/7, the clinic employs at least eight on-site veterinarians and nearly 100 other staff members. However, Ingersoll noted that hiring veterinarians is challenging.

“We are not topped out on doctors. But unfortunately, in this day and age, in the United States, veterinarians are a precious commodity. Everyone’s looking for one. So hiring them is very difficult,” Ingersoll said. “Our overall staff has grown to just about 100 people. And so that’s where it makes the doctors more efficient, even though we haven’t been able to add a ton of doctor coverage.”

The 12,000-square-foot clinic can accommodate about 50 cats and dogs. It features a dedicated area for X-rays, ultrasounds, a lab, and pharmacy needs.

Ingersoll mentioned plans for future expansion and acquiring more equipment, as some animals still need to be redirected to Buffalo or Syracuse for care.

Ingersoll expressed excitement about the clinic’s new oxygen tank, a piece of specialized equipment that the older, smaller clinic lacked.

While July was the busiest month since opening, Ingersoll believes patient numbers can rise as the clinic continues to grow.
