Sophie Cunningham makes true feelings clear after Indiana Fever star is ruled out for entire season with knee injury

SOPHIE Cunningham does not hold a grudge towards the player that caused her season-ending injury.

The Indiana Fever star, 29, has shot to fame this year while playing alongside Caitlin Clark.

Unfortunately for WNBA fans, Cunningham was ruled out of the remainder of the campaign after suffering a knee injury during Sunday’s overtime victory over the Connecticut Sun.

In the second quarter, the guard collided with Sun star Bria Hartley.

The incident left Cunningham clutching her knee, and she went on to have to be helped to the locker room.

Cunningham’s mom Paula was furious with the play, writing in a since-deleted X post, “Hartley is a disgruntled player having trouble everywhere she goes; she’s plain mean and plays out of control.”

The Fever star, however, does not share her mom’s fury.

Appearing on her Show Me Something podcast, Cunningham explained her true feelings on the incident.

“I’m actually really good friends with Bria,” she said.

“I don’t think that there was ill intent. I think it was a basketball play, I was just in the wrong spot at the wrong time.

“I have nothing but love for Bria and I even told my mom – because she had tweeted something.

“She [Hartley] would never try to hurt me. There are some girls that I think might but she wouldn’t do that.’

“So, I have nothing but love [for her] and I hope people stop giving Bria some heat because I don’t think she meant to do that at all.”

Explaining the extent of her injury, Cunningham added, “I did tear my MCL. If you’re going to hurt your knee, that is the best possible case.

“I was in the paint and someone ran into my knee and it just snapped. It went.

“And knee injuries are weird to me. But I felt a pop right away.”

    CAITLIN CLARK LATEST

The Fever have already been having to make do without their superstar Clark.

The 2024 No1 draft pick has not played since July 15.

Ironically Clark also got hurt during a game against Connecticut, injuring her groin during the final minute of their previous contest.

Clark, 23, has sat out of the last 13 games, as well as WNBA All-Star weekend.

Fever head coach Stephanie White did not have a positive update at Wednesday’s practice, saying, “Until she can get into practice and until you guys see her in practice, it’s really status quo.”

Unlike Cunningham, it is hoped that Clark will be able to return before the end of the season.
