Fishers Fire District approves new equipment purchases weeks before shutdown, accepts resignations of firefighters and commissioner

VICTOR, N.Y. – The fallout from the decision to dissolve the Fishers Fire District in Victor continues as the Fishers Fire District Board of Commissioners accepted several resignations, while also approving new equipment purchases at Monday night’s meeting.

Assistant Chief Michael Koch expressed disappointment, saying, “People moved into the town of Victor for the schools, for the community, for the public safety services. And the commissioners had brought us back to 1980,” Koch said.

Six firefighters resigned, as well as Fire Board Commissioner Fred Dewey, who voted for the dissolution and was not present at Wednesday’s meeting.

Lieutenant Pete Ellison described the situation as difficult. “The whole last two months, it’s been like that – a slow death. We’re down staffing, we’re down half our staff. So, it’s it’s tough to come into work,” Ellison said.

Koch was not surprised by Dewey’s resignation. “He’s a coward. And he came on to do a dirty job. And he will have no accountability for what he voted on,” Koch said.

While the board thanked five of the six resigning firefighters for their service, one was left out – Ryan Miller.

Firefighter Scott Brotherton was hurt by the exclusion.

“They can’t even thank firefighter Ryan Miller, for his service to this agency,” said Brotherton, who’s been on medical leave for almost a year. Brotherton blamed the board for his injuries sustained while fighting a mobile home fire with Miller.

“I firmly believe that if the fire commissioners actually answered the union’s call for putting a lieutenant on the engine and having a lieutenant on each truck, I don’t believe I’d be here today – standing like I am, in significant pain, struggling to walk,” Brotherton said.

During the meeting, the board also approved the purchase of a new shower stall at Station #2, and a new set of firetruck tires. This comes despite the district shutting it’s doors in just over a month, before turning over their property and equipment to the Town of Victor, which will cover the Fishers Fire District after its dissolution.

Commissioners declined to comment on the purchases, directing inquiries to their website.

“A set of tires for that truck is, about $800 each… To me, it doesn’t make sense,” Brotherton said.

The Fishers Fire Department is set to close on Oct. 1 at 7 a.m.
