Suburb stunned after ice cream shop owner allegedly secretly recorded girls

A national civil rights attorney is helping victims look into a suburban ice cream shop owner who allegedly secretly recorded them in a bathroom.

Steven Weisberg, 58, was arrested and charged with two counts of child pornography and unauthorized video recording at the Flavor Frenzy ice cream shop in suburban Addison.

It is alleged that Weisberg had multiple underage employees of the shop try on a series of t-shirts, requiring them to repeatedly change in a bathroom where he had allegedly installed a secret camera to record them undressing.

“The audacity of this alleged video recording scheme is appalling,” civil rights attorney Anthony Romanucci said in a statement .

Romanucci says his firm is looking into the harrowing incident, with Weisberg still in custody in a DuPage County jail.

“We believe innocent children have been exploited inappropriately and negligently at this business. Our clients are distressed that they may have been violated by a predator without their knowledge or consent, and we will use every means possible to understand what went down at that shop and examine all paths to accountability,” Romanucci said.

Addison police said they received an anonymous complaint of what appeared to be a fake electrical outlet on a wall inside a bathroom in the ice cream shop.

When police investigated the bathroom, they found a “small black lens” in one of the receptacles of the fake outlet, which was pointed at a urinal.

A complaint filed in DuPage County court alleges that Weisberg “asked (an underage employee) to try on and model different T-shirts for the business. It is further alleged that for the girl to change into the T-shirts, she had to use the bathroom.”

After the news broke, at least four additional potential victims came forward, with those underage employees informing police they were asked to model the shirts and to remove bras so that “there was no bra outline in the photos,” according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

“The allegations against Mr. Weisberg are not only a crime, they are appalling,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “The alleged secret video recording of these young girls should send a chill down the spine of each and every one of us. I commend the Addison Police Department for their extremely quick response to the initial complaint and their thorough follow-up investigation.”

Romanucci is pushing for new laws that would require surveillance cameras to flash a red light to help alert individuals to surreptitious recording in private spaces.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Addison Police Department at (630) 543-3080.
