Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Raleigh North Carolina Native Broder Swenson has set his sights on the University of Delaware’s School Record Board as he starts his college career for the Mid-Major program this fall. Speaking about his reasoning to head north up the Atlantic seaboard, Swenson said,

I am incredibly proud and excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of Delaware! I am very grateful and would like to thank my family, my teammates at the Marlins of Raleigh, and my coaches for their guidance and support through these past several years. I would also like to think Coach Pablo, Coach Katie and Coach Ross for providing me this amazing opportunity to pursue my academic and D1 swimming goals. GO HENS!!

Swenson, who attended Needham Broughton High School in North Carolina, represented his now alma mater at the NCHSAA 4A Championships this past February. He finished 7th overall in the 500 free with a time of 4:34.64. The event was his only individual race, but the distance freestyler did show off some sprinting prowess as he set a new PB in the 200 free relay prelims, opening up in 22.35, to help them earn a spot in the A-final as the 7th seeds

In the final, Swenson shifted from lead-off to 2nd and produced a sub-22 flying split of 21.96 to help his team move up on spot to finish 6th overall with a time of 1:27.32. He also split 48.38 in the 400 free to finish 14th overall in the event.

A few weeks later representing his club team, Marlins of Raleigh, Swenson took part in the North Carolina Senior Championships. While he was a little off in the freestyle events, he did set a new PB in the 200 breast, placing 18th with a 2:08.34. He also set a new PB in the 400 IM prelims going 4:02.02, before ultimately finishing 16th in the final with a 4:04.66.

PBs in the distance events did come eventually for Swenson, but he had to wait for Swim Atlanta’s Best of the South meet, in mid-March. There he set new PBs in the 200-1650 free as well as in the 200s of Fly and IM as well as in the 400 IM. A little over three weeks later, he went from 4:02.02 to 3:57.04 in the IM.

In the 200 free, he placed 18th with a new PB of 1:41.56, his lowest placing of the meet, as he finished 7th in the 4IM, 6th in the 200 IM (1:52.85) and 8th in the 200 fly (1:52.02). In his bread and butter events, Swenson placed 5th in the 500 free, breaking 4:33 for the first time with his 4:29.71. In the mile he finished 4th, his highest placing with a 15:29.24, a new PB by over 12 seconds.

The drops did not contain themselves to short course yards however, as he recorded new PBs at Junior Nationals in the 400 free (4:04.18), 800 free (8:28.03), 1500 free (16:09.06) and 400 IM (4:38.29).

    Best SCY Times:

    200 Free – 1:41.56 500 Free – 4:28.68 1000 Free – 9:14.38 1650 Free – 15:29.24 200 Fly – 1:52.00 400 IM – 3:54.43

The North Carolina native will be joining a Delaware program that finished 2nd last year at the Coastal Athletic Association Championships, but will be unable to defend their runner-up status as they have made the jump to the Atlantic Sun Conference this year. At the CAA Champs, the Blue Hens were led by Matvei Namakonov, a now-senior, who won the 50/100 free and 100 breast.

In the 500, Delaware placed two swimmers into the A-final with Denys Mialkovskyi finishing 3rd with a 4:23.97 and Gavin Currie nabbing 7th overall with a 4:27.26. In the 1650, Delaware again finished 3rd and 7th, only this time it was Ian Metzgar claiming the bronze in 15:39.07 and Dylan Smolders in 7th with a 15:45.90, one spot ahead of his teammate, Kevin Lewke‘s 15:48.19.

Both Mialkovskyi and Metzgar return to the team this year and will serve as good training partners for Swenson as the trio look to make a big splash at their first ASUN Championships. 4:20.72 was the top time last year in the 500 free, so Swenson has some work to do to challenge for the title. However, in the mile, 15:37.05 topped the podium so Swenson’s PB of 15:29.24 looks good to top the podium.

While not an NCAA Championship event, Swenson’s 1000 time of 9:14.38 undercuts the existing school record of 9:17.87 set by Andrew Taylor back in 2023. Albeit, Taylor time came from his mile split, whereas Swenson’s time came from just the event and he did not have to swim an additional 650 after.

Joining Swenson this fall in Newark, Delaware are Cameron Bucci, Will D’Orazio and Josh Donovan.
