FAIRPORT, N.Y. — The Fairport Music Festival is set to take place this weekend, but ongoing construction on the Thomas Creek Bridge has left a large section of North Main Street closed to traffic.
The project, which started in April, has made navigating the area more challenging for some locals. However, Beth Indovina, co-owner of the Fairport and Erie Canal Shop, says she still expects the festival to be a hit.
“I know it’ll be a little bit different for everybody but I think everybody’s very positive surrounding the event and what it’s therefore and what it’s meant for,” Indovina said. “So to be honest with you might be a little bit congested, of course but we’re going to a music festival everyone’s going to have a great time.”
Fairport Village Supervisor Bryan White also doesn’t expect the construction to impact the music festival, but Indovina says the project has impacted her business.
“It’s been challenging at times initially the biggest concern we had was the parking issue at least our current customers trying to find their way to us,” Indovina said.
Indovina says the village has helped find parking for her customers, but she remains concerned about the impact on nearby businesses.
“Hopefully our business is a nice anchor that’ll drag people to the village as the tourist season is kind of winding down as well, but we’re very happy to still be here and to help out our community,” Indovina said.
Indovina was initially told the bridge would be completed by the end of August, but the Department of Transportation now says it will not be finished until the first week of October. The delay is attributed to “challenges with the weather” and “unknowns about the infrastructure at the site,” officials said. The bridge was originally built in 1934.
