SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Prolific Bay Area musician Michael Franti appears to have canceled his tour amid allegations that he "groomed" a younger female musician who was previously part of his touring party. Franti, 59, has admitted to an extramarital affair, but has "vehemently" denied allegations of grooming.
The controversy emerged when Victoria Canal, a musician who toured with Franti's band, Michael Franti and Spearhead, when she was 19 alleged she was the victim of "grooming" by a "very powerful, decades older man." Although she did not directly name Franti, she said this person touched her while she was sleeping on the tour bus, made her share accommodations with him, and took pictures of her without her "awareness or consent."
"If I wanted a bed to sleep in and a shower to use, he made sure it was his," Canal, now 27, wrote on Instagram.
Franti, who has also declined to name anyone directly, has maintained his innocence in the face of the allegations, but has admitted to "a romantic relationship" outside of his marriage with an artist he toured with. He has maintained the relationship was consensual.
However, since Canal's allegations surfaced, others have come forward with similar allegations against Franti, who was born and raised in Oakland.
The "Soulshine at Sea" musical cruise which Franti was due to headline in November has since been canceled after several artists withdrew. Franti has also reportedly parted ways with his longtime management company, Activist Artist Management, according to Billboard.
Now it appears that the musician, who began his career as the frontman for the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, has canceled his entire tour. A visit to the tour section of his website revealed that all scheduled dates, including an Aug. 26 appearance at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, had been removed.
