The Bears Hosted Three Running Backs For Tryouts at Halas Hall

With the Chicago Bears running backs room in flux, it makes sense that the team had thee players in for tryouts on Tuesday.

NFL insider Aaron Wilson reports (via Twitter/X) that Royce Freeman, Kylin James, and Dillon Johnson were the running backs working out at Halas Hall on Tuesday. Let’s get to know these backs a little more.

Royce Freeman — Of the three ball carriers who were working out for the Bears, Royce Freeman’s name is the most notable. A third-round pick (71st overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft, Freeman has 79 games of playing experience under his belt. Freeman didn’t play in the regular season in 2024 and was most recently with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. The 29-year-old back began his career with the Denver Broncos (2018-20) before moving around to the Carolina Panthers (2021) and the Houston Texans (2021-22). Freeman ran for 1,017 yards and scored eight rushing touchdowns in his first two years as a pro, but has just 775 rushing yards and two ground scores in 49 games since.

Kylin James — Before finishing his college career at UNLV, Kylin James spent his first three years on campus at Central Arkansas, which is the university that most Chicago sports fans will associate with Bulls legend Scottie Pippen. At UNLV, James ran for 653 yards and scored five touchdowns. Averaging 7.3 yards per attempt is pretty nifty.

Dillon Johnson — A second-team All-Pac-12 contributor in 2023, Johnson was a teammate of Bears receiver Rome Odunze while with the Huskies. He also spent time collegiately at Mississippi State, but his best work came while at Washington in 2023. In his lone season in the Pacific Northwest, Johnson ran for 1,195 yards and scored 16 rushing touchdowns on 233 carries.

The Chicago Bears’ running backs room has some issues right now. Backups Roschon Johnson and Travis Homer have missed time during training camp with injuries. Seventh-round rookie Kyle Monangai sat out the Bears’ preseason win against the Bills with an undisclosed injury. Given their recent string of running back tryouts, there is a part of me that is curious if the team will try and wait out the Brian Robinson situation in Washington. Stay tuned.
