Cubs Prospects Report .. August 20, 2025: Iowa Rally Falls Short, South Bend Walk-Off, More

The Cubs’ minor league squads were back in action, kicking off their week-long series on Tuesday. Iowa suffered a close loss (P.S., it doesn’t look like Owen Caissie will be coming back any time soon!), Knoxville fell as well, while South Bend won with a walk-off, and Myrtle Beach cruised to a win. Let’s get to it.

Cubs Prospects Report | August 20, 2025

Triple-A Iowa Cubs

Iowa fell behind Sugar Land early on a two-run blast in the third inning allowed by starter Antonio Santos. Then the Space Cowboys picked up two more in the fourth on an error by Forrest Wall in left, which made it a 4-0 deficit. The Cubs got two runs back in the fifth. Carlos Pérez roped an RBI double, scoring James Triantos, then Kevin Alcántara brought in Pedro León for the second run with an RBI single to make it 4-2.

The score stayed that way until the ninth inning. Iowa loaded the bases with no one out to start the final frame. Carlos Pérez then brought one run in with a sacrifice fly. That made it 4-3 with the tying run on second and the winning run on first with only one out. However, Alcántara struck out and Nicky Lopez grounded out, ending the comeback attempt.

    Notable Performances

    James Triantos | 2-4, 2 R, 2B, BB, SB Kevin Alcántara | 2-5, RBI Nicky Lopez | 2-3, 2B, 2 BB

FINAL: Space Cowboys 4, Cubs 3 | Box Score

    Double-A Knoxville Smokies

Knoxville jumped out to the first lead of the ball game in the bottom of the third on a solo shot from Ethan Hearn. In the fourth, though, the Biscuits got it back and more with a pair of unearned runs. Chase Watkins retired two of the first three batters of the inning, then a Pablo Aliendo throwing error kept the inning alive for Montgomery. The Biscuits took advantage of the error, taking the lead on a two-run single.

The Smokies and Biscuits traded runs in the seventh inning to make it a 4-2 game. Knoxville’s run came on a Jordan Nwogu RBI single. After Montgomery added one more in the ninth, the Smokies got the tying run to the plate in the bottom half with just one out, but they weren’t able to score and ultimately fell 5-2.

    Notable Performances

    Brett Bateman | 2-3, R, 3 RBI, BB Ethan Hearn | 1-4, HR Jordan Nwogu | 1-3, RBI

FINAL:  Biscuits 5, Smokies 2 | Box Score

    High-A South Bend Cubs

South Bend got a very nice start from Connor Schultz on Tuesday against the Kernels. Schultz allowed two runs over 5.2 innings against the Midwest League’s top team. The Cubs got out to an early 1-0 lead, but it could have been more. Christian Hernandez stepped to the plate with runners on the corners and no one out. Hernandez grounded into a double play, though. One run scored, but the damage was limited.

Quad Cities then picked up runs in the fourth and fifth to make it a 2-1 game. In the sixth, Ariel Armas tied things up with an RBI double. The game stayed that way until the ninth, when Brian Kalmer walked it off with a sacrifice fly to give South Bend a 3-2 win.

    Notable Performances

    Connor Schultz | 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 6 K, 2 BB Ariel Armas | 1-3, R, RBI, 2B, BB Edgar Alvarez | 1-3, R, BB

    Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans

After three close games with some drama-filled endings, we have what was a relatively easy win for the Pelicans. Myrtle Beach jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an Alexey Lumpuy RBI single. In the top of the fourth, Charleston tied it up. But that tie didn’t last long. Eli Lovich tripled to set up a big inning, and Angel Cepeda, Christian Olivo, and Ty Southisene all brought in runs to make it 4-1. In the seventh, Lovich picked up an RBI single before Cepeda hit a three-run homer, making it 8-2, which was the final.

    Notable Performances

    Angel Cepeda | 2-4, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI Eli Lovich | 2-4, 2 R, RBI, 3B Alexey Lumpuy | 2-4, R, RBI, SB

FINAL: Pelicans 8, River Dogs 2 | Box Score
