Top 25 Blackhawks of All-Time: Nos. 11-15

We’re spending a lot of time during the hockey-quiet days of August celebrating the Blackhawks’ Centennial season by looking back at some of the greatest individuals in team history. From individual award winners. the greatest performances in history and unique records, the Blackhawks franchise has had a colorful history.

This week, we’re spending time counting down our top 25 Blackhawks players of all-time. As we get to the middle of the week, we’ve already knocked off 10 of our top 25. Thus far we’ve discussed:

    Nos. 16-20 Nos. 21-25 (+ Honorable Mention)

Let’s climb to the next five on our rankings.

    11. Doug Wilson, LHD

Hockey Hall of Fame inductee1981-82 Norris Trophy6-time All-StarBlackhawks career: 938 games, 225 goals, 554 assists, 779 points, 80 power play goals

Wilson’s 779 points remain the gold standard among Blackhawks defensemen; Duncan Keith ranks second among all Blackhawks defensemen with 625. He was a gorgeous skater who did everything during the 1980s for the Blackhawks. If we’re honest, his No. 24 is long overdue retirement by the Blackhawks and his Hockey Hall of Fame induction came years later than warranted.

    12. Bill Mosienko, RW

    Hockey Hall of Fame inductee1944-45 Lady Byng5-time All-StarBlackhawks career: 711 games, 258 goals, 282 assists, 540 points, 28 game-winning goals

The legendary photo above is of Mosienko after he set an NHL record, scoring three goals in 21 seconds against the New York Rangers on March 23, 1952. That remains the fastest hat trick in the history of the game. But Mosienko was more than that single game. He was one of the first great scorers in Blackhawks history. His 258 goals for the Blackhawks still rank 10th in franchise history, and he retired 70 years ago.

    13. Charlie Gardiner, G

Hockey Hall of Fame inducteeStanley Cup Champion (1934)Captain (1933-34)2-time Vezina Trophy winner (1931-32, 1933-34)3-time All-NHLBlackhawks career: 318 games, 112-151-52, 2.02 goals against average, 42 shutouts

Yes, you read that correctly above. Gardiner, as the goalie, was the captain of the first Stanley Cup championship team in Blackhawks history. He is still the only NHL goalie to be captain of a Cup-winning team. Gardiner was one of the bright stars in the game in the late 1920s and early 1930s, but sadly passed away. He won the Stanley Cup while dealing with an infection that went untreated and ultimately cost him his life. Born in Scotland, Gardiner’s career was cut short far too early.

    14. Ed Belfour, G

    Hockey Hall of Fame inductee1990-91 Calder Trophy1990-91 All-Rookie Team2-time Vezina Trophy winner (1990-91, 1992-93)3-time Jennings Trophy winner (1990-91, 1992-93, 1994-95)3-time All-StarBlackhawks career: 415 games, 201-138-56, .903 save pct, 2.65 goals against average, 30 shutouts

“The Eagle” burst onto the NHL scene with a stunning rookie campaign in 1990-91 that saw him win the Calder, Vezina, Jennings and finish third in Hart Trophy voting. He was one of the most dominant goaltenders of the 1990s and helped lead the Blackhawks to one Stanley Cup Final.

    Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

    15. Chris Chelios, RHD

Hockey Hall of Fame inducteeNumber 7 retiredCaptain (1995-99)2-time Norris Trophy winner (1992-93, 1995-96)2-time All-NHLBlackhawks career: 664 games, 92 goals, 395 assists, 487 points, 1,495 PIM

While some fans still have a problem with Chelios getting traded to Detroit, if you watched him play for the Blackhawks there was no denying his greatness. And he’s come home to Chicago in the last few years to become an ambassador for the organization and his jersey was retired. Cheli was a great captain, fearless leader and physical enforcer. He is the greatest American-born defenseman in NHL history, and he played more games for his hometown Blackhawks than he did for the Red Wings or Canadiens.
