Soupy’s Significance, Waiting Game, Weight Gain, USA Camp, Detroit Retiring 91, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Today is Aug. 20, which means we are exactly one month away from the first preseason game on the NHL schedule (St. Louis at Dallas). The Blackhawks’ first preseason game isn’t until the 23rd, but being inside of one month away from actual hockey games is exciting.

We’re still waiting for news on the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase, which will be held in Minnesota again this year; the Blackhawks would have hosted by they’re pushing it back because of the construction at Fifth Third Arena. It will be in Chicago in 2026. I’m fascinated to see which prospects will be included on the roster this year — and which players won’t travel for the games with the Wild and Blues. The Blackhawks announced their roster on Sept. 5 last year. Stay tuned there.

I’m legitimately excited for Frank Nazar and Alex Vlasic to be invited to the USA Olympic Orientation Camp next week in Michigan. Both showed very well at the Men’s World Championship, and this is good recognition that they’re among the best players the United States has to consider for the Winter Olympics. It’s also a strong confidence boost for both players coming into this fall’s NHL training camp with the Blackhawks. The annual NHL/NHLPA European Player Media Tour will take place in Milan on August 22, and the league and players are partnering with Lega Serie A for some events to celebrate the game. Seven players named to preliminary Olympic rosters are taking part in the events in Milan, including Blackhawks forward Lukas Reichel. He was one of the first six players named to Germany’s Olympic roster.

Sebastian Aho, Miro Heiskanen, Nico Hischier, William Nylander, Lucas Raymond, Lukas Reichel & Moritz Seider will be among the players in attendance when the @NHL, @NHLPA & @SerieA_EN bring their groundbreaking partnership to life in Milan this week. All 7 players were named to… pic.twitter.com/TOEMct0kJW

    — NHL Public Relations (@NHLPR) August 19, 2025 On Monday, the CHGO guys were asked to rank the most important players of the Blackhawks dynasty. I think, when we employ some context, Brian Campbell‘s significance on that roster build is too easily overlooked. The Blackhawks overpaid Campbell at a time when most agents didn’t even answer phone calls from a 312 area code number. Campbell coming to Chicago was the first real, significant display that the Blackhawks were ready, willing and able to spend money to compete. He walked so Marian Hossa could run… or is it skate? Not only was he a very good player for the Blackhawks who played an important role on the ice, but his contract meant more in the larger scheme of things than I think people remember. Speaking of Hossa, we discussed Nos. 16-20 in our rankings of the top 25 players in Blackhawks history yesterday. We’ll move up to the next five later today.

    — Tab Bamford (@The1Tab) August 19, 2025 This is a terrific read from Fluto Shinzawa at The Athletic. It focuses on Will Moore, a ’25 second-round pick by the Bruins. But I think it’s valuable for Blackhawks fans to consider how some of the young players who are drafted and “could us a few more pounds” go about bulking up without compromising the skill that got them drafted in the first place (I’m thinking largely about guys like Kevin Korchinski).

    — The Athletic NHL (@TheAthleticNHL) August 19, 2025 The St. Louis Blues signed forward Milan Lucic to a PTO. Sure, why not? The Columbus Blue Jackets signed defenseman Brendan Smith to a PTO. Can you imagine a world in which an NHL team tweets a hashtag about retiring a jersey? I know the Blackhawks have said they don’t want to do jersey retirements during their Centennial season because they want to focus on the organization’s overall history, but… the Red Wings are making one big omission from their rafters right on Jan. 12.
