Niles bridges to receive makeover

NILES — Two former CSX train bridges in Niles will get a fresh coat of paint in the coming weeks as part of the Niles-Greenway Phase IV bike trail expansion, Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz said Tuesday.

The project targets one bridge over Robbins Avenue near the trailhead and another over Main Street near Maple Street. The $400,000 effort, adhering to Ohio Department of Transportation specifications, was publicly bid and awarded with funding from $300,000 in state capital dollars, $75,000 from Trumbull County and $25,000 from the city.

The bridges will be painted in federal standard insignia blue, featuring an offset shadow stencil of “NILES.”

Mientkiewicz said the work aims to enhance the aesthetics of the structures, last painted in the 1980s, as part of broader efforts to beautify and revitalize downtown Niles.

Two other bridges remain on active rail lines owned by Genesee & Wyoming Railroad. The city noted it cannot use taxpayer funds on private property but is in ongoing talks with the company about their appearance.
