CUBS LINEUP — Hey, the Cubs won a game largely on the strength of their offense. That’s awesome. There were timely hits with RISP and MULTIPLE home runs. Let’s see if they can keep it going tonight, while we cheer from Lottie’s during our Watch Party (see you there!).
Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for Game 2.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Michael Busch, 1B Ian Happ, LF Seiya Suzuki, DH Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Carson Kelly, C Nico Hoerner, 2B Owen Caissie, RF Dansby Swanson, SS Matt Shaw, 3BFirst and foremost: Yes, this afternoon’s hero, Owen Caissie, is back in the Cubs starting lineup, while Kyle Tucker continues to rest/reset.
I’m glad that’s how Craig Counsell played it – I was worried he was going to waffle quickly because of the doubleheader.
I also like rewarding Caissie for his big game. Maybe he can gather some momentum and force his way into the fold more often down the stretch.
Beyond that, Nico Hoerner and Carson Kelly are both back in the lineup tonight. And they’ve got their work cut out for them against Brandon Woodruff.
Milwaukee Brewers Lineup:
Sal Frelick, CF Caleb Durbin, 3B William Contreras, DH Christian Yelich, LF Andrew Vaughn, 1B Isaac Collins, RF Brice Turang, 2B Danny Jansen, C Joey Ortiz, SSPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Jameson Taillon, RHP
Over a month ago, Jameson Taillon injured his calf during training, and he’s been out ever since (last start was June 29!). But he’s made his way back to Chicago in time for this five-game series against the Brewers, which we appreciate, after three minor league rehab starts.
And you definitely like the way things had started to trend before he was activated:
First: 3.0 IP, 7H, 7ER, 0BB, 1KSecond: 4.2 IP, 3H, 1ER, 0BB, 6KMost recent: 5.1 IP, 2H, 0ER, 2BB, 4K
Regardless of how tonight goes, Jameson Taillon is going to be a critical part of the Cubs rotation the rest of the season (and likely in the playoffs, depending on how things shake out between now and then). So here’s to a healthy, productive, and efficient outing, the latter of which became all the more important after a quick exit from Cade Horton this afternoon.
Milwaukee Brewers: Brandon Woodruff, RHP
Brandon Woodruff’s season didn’t get started until July due to shoulder surgery, but he picked up right where he left off, earning a 2.06 ERA over his first seven starts (five of which were 6.0 + innings).
With that said, his last outing was conspicuously cut short at just 65 pitches over 4.0 IP.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy claims it was a scheduled short start, as Woodruff eases his way back into full-time duty. But I’m not sure I fully buy that. I can see why the Brewers might want to rest him in general, let alone just before facing the Cubs in a five-game series. But I can also see that being an excuse (after the fact) for something that maybe didn’t feel quite right.
Maybe we’ll find out tonight.
