Notre Dame Names a Starter, Michigan Snags Top Recruit, Preseason Freshman All-Americans, and Other Big Ten (and Notre Dame) Bullets

Following the lead of Ohio State on Monday, Notre Dame has named its starting quarterback for Week 1 against Miami. We’ll talk about the decision from Head Coach Marcus Freeman in addition to what the offense might look like against the Canes.

Plus, the CFP commissioner spoke on the Big Ten’s expansion idea, Michigan snagged a five-star recruit, and the AP named its Preseason Freshman All-American team. Let’s get to it.

When the Notre Dame Fighting Irish take the field in 12 days at Hard Rock Stadium against the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes, it will be sophomore CJ Carr leading the offense onto the field. On Tuesday morning, the team announced Carr would be their starting quarterback and officially won the tight offseason position battle with Kenny Minchey. When last season ended, most expected that it was just a formality that Carr would be named the starter, but Minchey impressed in spring practice and throughout the summer, ultimately leading to a back-and-forth competition between the two former highly rated recruits. The book on the race was that Minchey did a better job taking care of the ball, while Carr showed a few more flashes of a higher ceiling. Some believed that due to those traits, combined with Minchey’s ability to create with his legs a bit more, he might be better suited to get the start in a tough road environment. Clearly, though, Carr proved that not to be the case.

    — Notre Dame Football (@NDFootball) August 19, 2025 Carr was either a four-star or five-star recruit out of Saline, Mich., depending on which publication you follow for prospect rankings. The grandson of legendary Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr surprised some when he committed to Notre Dame. He spent much of last season on the shelf with a shoulder injury, but clearly, he’s done enough to win the job this offseason. Marcus Freeman said Monday that ultimately the decision came down to him, but he certainly took into account the insight from veteran offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock and deemed Carr the choice. After last season and the job Freeman did getting the Irish to the National Title game, it’s hard to doubt his instinct. For what it’s worth, while Carr has yet to take a college football game snap (neither has Minchey), he’ll be taking over a veteran offense. The Irish have arguably the top running back in the country in Jeremiyah Love, and are as deep in that position group as anyone. They have what should be a phenomenal offensive line, even with the injury to projected starter Charles Jagusah. Their pass catchers also appear to be as good and deep a group as they’ve had in a few years. So, Carr is coming into a situation that should be very friendly to a first-time starter. Moving on from Notre Dame, Michigan is in the news again today, but for good reason this time! Wolverines Head Coach Sherrone Moore snagged the top running-back recruit in the country, five-star Savion Hiter, out of Virginia. Hiter is just the latest in a long line of outstanding running back play at Michigan. Last season, their backfield featured Donovan Edwards and Kalel Mullings. The year before that, it was Blake Corum. Prior to him, Zach Charbonnet and Hassan Haskins toted the rock for the Wolverines. All of those backs are currently on NFL rosters. So, if you want to go to the NFL as a running back, clearly you can do worse than the Wolverines.

    — Hayes Fawcett (@Hayesfawcett3) August 19, 2025 We’ve talked about the Big Ten’s reported playoff expansion idea a couple of times now. Well, the executive director of the College Football Playoff, Rich Clark, weighed in on that floated plan as well. I would rather stay at this than rush to a decision that’s not good. So if the decision is that we stay at the 12-team playoff until we know more, until we watch that another year, until we can discuss the other options on the table a little bit more, it’s worth sticking to the 12-team until we can come to really a solid, sound decision for the future.” – Rich Clark on CFP Expansion So, from that quote, it sounds like we won’t be seeing an expansion immediately, but it also didn’t sound like expansion in the near future was off the table, either. My two cents are that the 12-team playoff last year was criticized for not having competitive first-round matchups. If we expand to 24, I think we’re looking at several non-competitive matchups in the first few rounds. I get there’s likely more money in a bigger playoff and more teams, but at some point, enough is enough. I think we’re at a sweet spot in college football where the regular season games still mean a lot, but you’re not automatically eliminated by a loss or two. If we expand to 24 or 28 teams, the regular season just gets devalued too much. I’d still love it, but part of it would lose its luster. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) It seems like the 12-team playoff is here to stay at least for the near future, but I don’t expect the Big Ten and the SEC to stop pushing for even more representation any time soon. So buckle up, I would imagine potential playoff expansion will be a storyline pretty much every offseason going forward. Longtime CBS NFL analyst Phil Simms is making the move to the college ranks! The former New York Giants quarterback inked a new deal with NBC Sports and is slated to be on the call for several Big Ten games on NBC this upcoming season. Simms most notably paired with Jim Nantz for the NFL on CBS’ A-team broadcast before being replaced by Tony Romo. Preseason All-American honors don’t necessarily mean a ton, but at least when voters make their selections, they have seen those players in uniform before. Preseason Freshman All-American teams, however, seem like such a complete guessing game. Like, we’ve never seen any of these players play college football before, and they’ve only had a few months in an actual program. Not to mention, most voters haven’t even seen them take a live practice rep! Alas, the AP named its Preseason Freshman All-American team, and the Big Ten was pretty well represented, headlined by quarterback Bryce Underwood.
