Another Big Day, the Magic Brewers, Tucker’s Troubles, and Other Cubs Bullets

Back to school. Today is the day. It’s always a lot of mixed emotions, because, on the one hand, I like everyone getting back to their routines (myself included). On the other hand, it’s a little sad not to have the kids around as much throughout the day. Plus the whole time marching on, everyone getting older, eventually we’re dust thing.

Try again. A deeply improbable five-game series sweep is now off the table for the Cubs, and a nearly-as-improbable 4-1 series win is a tick less likely now that today will feature a double-header. It’s tough to sweep those on any given day (unless you’re the Brewers, I guess). Today is a day the Cubs can win some games. I leave it there, and I watch what happens. Matthew Boyd will start game one today for the Cubs, with Jameson Taillon starting game two. Jordan Wicks is reportedly coming to Chicago, so it’s possible he’d added as today’s 27th man, or is brought up regardless (recall, Javier Assad has been optioned to Iowa). I wish the Cubs would just freaking let him take a start already, and it’s possible that comes later in the week. We’ll see – could depend on whether he’s needed today. Thankfully, the Cubs bullpen is in pretty good shape despite Cade Horton lasting only 2.2 innings with the blister issue – four of yesterday’s innings were covered by guys who might be optioned back out (Luke Little and Gavin Hollowell). I have an answer for this question:

Does everyone just fall apart when they play Milwaukee? Asking for a friend (Seriously. He's asking) They just keep coming at you, forcing mistakes.

    — Jesse Rogers (@JesseRogersESPN) August 18, 2025 Do teams facing the Brewers fall apart? Yes. Clearly. Do the Brewers alone “force” it? Not entirely. I mean, a team’s hard-nosed play doesn’t “force” a pitcher to suddenly develop a blister, for example. The Brewers are very good. They are also the unquestionable recipient of so much voodoo bullshit good luck it’s ridiculous. I think we can concede both things: good and lucky. And the Cubs kinda stink right now, which also seems to be something the Brewers keep running into. Similarly, this mystical aura about the Brewers somehow not being one of the most analytically-driven teams in baseball, and somehow being the only team that cares about fundamentals or whatever, is a bit much:

With all due respect to analytics, the Brewers are at least trying to play the game properly, says @Ken_Rosenthal."While organizations seem to obsess over enhancing pitching velocity and hitters' exit velocities, why can't they do the same on the fundamental side?" pic.twitter.com/3omrn3zwl8

    — Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) August 18, 2025 Last thing on the Brewers – my eyes rolled out of the back of my head and then exploded:

    — Talkin’ Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) August 18, 2025 Kyle Tucker is struggling badly, is deeply frustrated, and is going to get some time off (wonder if the double-header throws that plan for a loop at all). The results aren’t there, and something clearly looks off when you watch his swings:

Kyle Tucker’s launch angle has dropped sharply. Since late July, he hasn’t had a single 10-batted-ball stretch where his average launch angle reached the red zone — the range where he usually drives home runs and extra-base hits. pic.twitter.com/yAimXNTIWs

Updating Kyle Tucker’s rolling bat speed:Over the past week, Tucker’s bat speed has continued to dip, marking his slowest 15-day stretch of the season. On a rolling 5-swing average, he still hasn’t touched the red zone—the last time he did was late July. While this is… t.co/8mzFUBNfWT pic.twitter.com/92IXallhKd

    — Brendan Miller (@brendan_cubs) August 19, 2025 Unless and until Kyle Tucker gets right, it’s hard to resume optimism about this Cubs offense as a whole. The way he had been producing was so important to every other bat around him in the lineup. As for what exactly happened, it’s still a bit of a mystery, since he raked for a month AFTER the finger injury. But maybe there were some after-effects:

Jed Hoyer: Kyle Tucker's mechanical adjustments after finger injury are 'probably a big part' of his prolonged slump t.co/MCwv5fWshn pic.twitter.com/NO5GWIeZdS

    — 670 The Score (@670TheScore) August 18, 2025 “He probably changed his mechanics a bit while fighting through it,” Hoyer said on the Mully & Haugh Show on Monday morning. “And I think that probably is a big part of it. I mean, he is a little bit different mechanically than he was at the beginning of the year, and that’s what he’s working hard to get back to. Clearly, he’s struggling, you can see it in his face, in his body language, how much he’s struggling. He’s such a natural hitter. For a guy like that to go through an extended stretch like this, I’m sure it’s one of the first times in his life he’s probably gone through this. It’s hard. Obviously, it’s a big year for him and he wants to help the team. He’s sort of exasperated right now. I understand it. I know he’ll get through it. He’s too good of a player not to. But it’s certainly hard to watch him struggle because I know how much he wants to be hitting and be helping the team.” © Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images Things happened so quickly with Zack Wheeler’s unique medical situation, and I hope his recovery is smooth:

Right-handed pitcher Zack Wheeler underwent a successful thrombolysis procedure to remove a blood clot in his right upper extremity this morning by Dr. Paul DiMuzio at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.Further treatment and a subsequent timeline of recovery for Wheeler is to…

    — Philadelphia Phillies (@Phillies) August 18, 2025 Hard to predict what the future holds for him, near and long-term, I’m sure. The Phillies are mostly talking about/thinking about Wheeler’s health as a person right now, rather than as a baseball player. I don’t think anyone is anticipating him being back this year. It’s all just a surprising and awful situation for one of the best pitchers of this era. Crazy:
