It’s the final week of the 2025 PGA Tour season, and the big question is: Can anyone beat Scottie Scheffler to the $10 million first prize?

The Tour Championship 2025 betting preview
It seems hard to fathom right now, but Scottie Scheffler got off to a slow start in 2025.
The world number one contrived to cut his hand on a wine glass over Christmas, and he struggled to rediscover his best form in the New Year.
In previous years he had been dominant ahead of the Masters but, on this occasion, although the first five starts of his year were all top 25 finishes, just two were top 10s, and his best was third in the Genesis Invitational.
Since then, however, he has been sensational.
His last 13 starts have all reaped top 10s finishes with five wins, including the PGA Championship in May, the Open in July, and the BMW Championship last week when he overhauled a four-shot final round deficit with apparent ease.
He did not so much beat the man who held that advantage – Robert MacIntyre – as slip the stiletto knife in the Scotsman’s back with the minimum of fuss.
This week, he defends the Tour Championship, but, unlike last year, the tournament begins with everyone on the same score. The Starting Strokes trial – designed to benefit the strongest players throughout the year – has been deemed too complex, too contrived, and, frankly, unnecessary for a golfer of Scheffler’s quality.
Can anyone defeat him this week and pinch the huge $10 million first prize from under his nose?
Rory McIlroy has a good course record, but his form remains poor. The same thing could be said of Justin Thomas.
Who should we back then? Let’s find out.
Sam Burns each way
In his last two visits to East Lake, Sam Burns has found something.
He was the fourth-lowest scorer all week in 2023 and then top 10 through 54 holes before finishing T13th as lowest scorer last year (ignoring the complication of Starting Strokes).
He finished strongly at TPC Southwind two weeks ago and then spent all of last week in the top 10 before finishing an excellent fourth.
He can ride that wave this week and maybe even push his best friend Scheffler to the line.

Justin Rose First Round Leader each way
Englishman Justin Rose has enjoyed a sparkling 13 months that’s taken in second place at both the Open and the Masters, followed by victory in the St Jude Championship two weeks ago.
He’s well into his 40s now, but is determined to stay relevant and works ferociously hard on his fitness and preparation.
It explains why he consistently makes strong starts in big events (he was the solo first round leader in the Masters, for example).
He shared the first round lead in this event in 2012 and was third after 18 holes on his penultimate start in 2018.

Justin Thomas Top 20
Although a winner and three-time runner-up earlier this season, as mentioned above, Justin Thomas has found life a little more difficult recently.
But there have been signs of life.
He made the top 10 in the Travellers Championship and thrashed 65s in both the Scottish Open, and the St Jude Championship.
Moreover, his East Lake form is startling.
Ignoring the Starting Strokes that confuse matters, he is 8-for-8 at being among the top 10 low scorers for the week.
It’s a tremendous record. Take the odds against that he repeats his success this week.
