To nobody’s surprise, Joe Flacco will open the season as the Cleveland Brown’s starting quarterback.
The team announced the news on Monday, and with that came reports of their current QB depth chart, a list that has divided fans over the order of the signal callers.
As Flacco gears up to start the first regular season game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he will also start the team’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday.
Which of the other three quarterbacks gets minutes remains to be seen, with Shedeur Sanders nursing an oblique injury and Kenny Pickett yet to get a single snap.
Meanwhile Dillon Gabriel, who came under fire for his controversial comments after his Browns preseason debut, is dealing with a small hamstring issue.
These injuries, and the decision to not give Sanders any practise reps with the starting offence during camp, has meant Flacco has taken the overwhelming majority of first-team reps.
The Cleveland Browns QB depth chart
The Browns’ current QB depth chart, in order, is believed to be: Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel, and Sanders.
And while some have taken aim at Flacco’s starting role, considering his age and that two promising rookies are on the roster, many fans have taken issue with Pickett’s position.
Pickett, a 2022 first-round pick whom the Browns traded for in the off-season, has not practised in 11-on-11 drills since that hamstring injury in mid-July.
He also hasn’t played in any preseason games, while Sanders and Gabriel have, with the former seriously impressing on his preseason debut.
“How does Stefanski justify Pickett at 2?” one fan posted on X.
“Pickett should be 4! He hasn’t earned nothing,” another wrote.
Some fans were left confused by Pickett’s place on the depth chartGETTY Sanders has got a long road ahead of him in order to displace Flacco Kevin Stefanski is facing criticism for his current QB depth chartGETTY“Someone please explain to me how Kenny Pickett is #2 on depth chart? Hasn’t played one preseason game. Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t this his 3rd team he’s been on,” one fan wrote.
What does Flacco being starter mean for the rest of the QBs?
The decision to start Flacco also likely comes from his performances the last time he wore a Browns jersey.
When he signed with the franchise late in 2023, he helped lead the Browns to a surprise run to the postseason where they lost to the Houston Texans in the wild card round.
And while Flacco’s future at the Browns is clearly short-term, his starting role has significant implications.
Sanders and Gabriel are two rookies who are set to begin their pro careers as backups to Flacco.
Their longterm status is hardly a given though considering the Browns have two first-round pick in next year’s selections, which is expected to have a strong quarterback class.
That massive draft capital the Browns hold in 2026 means the Browns have to evaluate the future of both Gabriel and Sanders sooner rather later.
And, head coach Kevin Stefanksi has already admitted that he is likely to cut a quarterback when the time to shrink the roster from 90 to 53 comes next week.
“We’ll let it play out as we get closer to the cut down,” Stefanski said.
“Those are all conversations that we are always having, but those are tough decisions. You know, I’d like to keep everybody, but not realistic.”
The Browns have one of the most difficult schedules to open the 2025 season, as they face six straight games against teams with winning records in 2024.
Hence Flacco could be the steady bridge they need before one of the young quarterbacks step in.
So, while the drama over who will be the Browns starting quarterback is over, the quarterback saga is really only just beginning.
