Learning & Rising .. Previewing Monroe football’s 2025 campaign

In 2021, Monroe didn’t win a single game. Then head coach Terrell Cunningham took over.

“We started off as a program that didn’t have much of anything,” Cunningham said. “We didn’t have a field. We definitely didn’t have what we have now.”

Four years later and what the the Red Jackets have now is some of the best talent Section V has to offer. Monroe’s star wide receiver Messiah Hampton is committed to the University of Oregon and there’s plenty of other that are sure to follow in his footsteps and make the jump to college next year.

“[Anthony] Omebe, [Jermaine Montgomery], [Christien] Franklin-those guys all have collegiate opportunities waiting for them,” Cunningham said–and there’s plenty more talent coming from their underclassmen.

But for all their individual accolades, these guys are raring to go.

“Very excited bro,” Montgomery said smiling. “We had a long offseason. I’ve been ready to get back on the field. I can’t lie to you.”

The Jackets won the Section V title in 2023, but last year came up one point short in the semifinals.

“I’ve been waiting for this since the end of our last season,” said Terrell Cunningham Jr., the team’s quarterback.

A group that feels refueled after a disappointing loss.

“Last year was a losing season for us,” Hampton said. “So we [are] just coming back with that mindset.”

“When you win, you don’t learn a lot. When you lose, you learn the little things that you guys need to work on,” Omebe said.

The little thing right now is tightening up and conquering each and every day.

Day one is ring day. Every day is ring day,” said junior center Nicholas Reeves. “So we got practice like we want a ring. It’s not going to be handed to us.”

The jackets are looking for the top prize in New York State High school football.

    “State championship,” Hampton said.

“Blocks and rings only,” Omebe said.

    “Gotta be states,” Montgomery said.

Just four years after this program didn’t win a single game and just four years after Coach Cunningham took over–this team wants to go all the way.

“The expectation for us every year is always states,” Cunningham Sr. said. “It’s always states.”

Monroe’s first game is set for Saturday, September 6th, against Rochester Prep.
