Possible measles exposure reported at Denver International Airport

An out-of-state resident traveled through Denver International Airport while contagious with measles last week, and public health officials are urging people who passed through Concourse C to watch for symptoms.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment also reported a second new measles case in Mesa County. That person, an adult whose vaccination status is unknown, may have gotten measles from the same source that infected another resident who tested positive for the virus last week, the department said.

The first Mesa County patient hadn’t traveled to an area with an outbreak or visited a known exposure location, which raises the possibility that the virus is spreading silently in the area.

The out-of-state resident who changed planes at DIA on Aug. 12 arrived at gate C51 and boarded a flight from gate C50. People who passed through that area between 4:30 and 7 p.m. that day could have encountered the virus, and should watch for symptoms through Sept. 2, the department said.

Measles symptoms include a fever, runny nose, red eyes, cough and a rash that typically starts on the face. Most people become contagious about four days before the rash appears, so they could inadvertently infect others while thinking they have a less serious disease.

People who have visited an exposure location and develop symptoms should call ahead before seeking health care so the clinic or hospital can take precautions to protect other patients.

Other exposure locations related to the new Mesa County case include:

Enjoy Church, 720 Grand Ave., Grand Junction, between 9 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Aug. 10. Symptoms could develop through Aug. 31. Jimmy John’s (dine-in or pick-up), 2502 Highway 6 and 50, Grand Junction, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Aug. 10. Symptoms could develop through Aug. 31. Appleton Clinic, 607 25 Road #201, Grand Junction, between 1:30 and 4:40 p.m. Aug. 11; between 10:50 a.m. and 1:40 p.m. Aug. 13; and between 1:54 and 5 p.m. Aug. 15. Symptoms could develop through Sept. 5. Chick-fil-A (drive-thru and dine-in), 522 Bogart Lane, Grand Junction, between 3 and 9 p.m. Aug. 11. Symptoms could develop through Sept. 1. Maverik Gas Station, 1103 U.S. 50, Fruita, between 5 and 7:30 p.m. Aug. 12. Symptoms could develop through Sept. 2. Colorado public health officials have recorded 21 measles cases in the state so far this year. In the last decade, Colorado generally saw between zero and two cases a year.

Ten of this year’s measles cases are linked to a previous exposure at DIA, according to the state health department. Four of them were passengers on a Turkish Airlines flight that landed in Denver with an infected passenger, five were people passing through the airport during the exposure window, and one was infected through a secondary contact.
