For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Mason Francis, a four-time Ohio high school state champion and “Best of the Rest” sprint freestyler in our latest re-rank of the boys’ high school class of 2025, is set to swim for The Ohio State University beginning in the fall of 2025.
“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to THE Ohio State University to further my academic and swimming career. I would like to thank my family, teammates, and coaches for everything that has helped make my dream a reality. GO BUCKS!”
Francis recently graduated from Vincent Warren High School, where he was a member of the varsity swimming team all four years. He is currently based in Ohio but represented Hawaii’s Punahou Aquatics Institute at the club level for the past year. This summer, Francis began representing Ohio State University.
At the OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association) Division II State Championship back in February, Francis posted a series of best times en route to claiming back-to-back state titles in the 50 and 100 free. He won the 100 free in 43.55, setting a new OHSAA Division II record in the process. Francis’s performance shaved .2 off of the previous record, set back in 2018 by Cody Bybee, and marked only his second time going sub-44 after he slid under that barrier for the first time during prelims (43.88). Francis also won the 50 free in 19.71 after clocking 19.79 during prelims, marking his first time breaking 20 seconds in the event.
Earlier in the season, Francis set new lifetime best times in the 200 free and 100 back at the Big Red Invitational. He won the 200 free in 1:47.18, shaving .71 off of his previous best from 2023, before clocking a tremendous personal best in the 100 back, which he won in 52.05. Francis’s performance in the 100 back knocked nearly four seconds off of his former best time (55.96) from 2023.
Francis shone at the Speedo Sectionals – Boise in March, throwing down another stream of personal bests. He won the 50 free (19.68) and 100 free (43.71), in addition to taking 3rd in the 100 back (48.90) and 100 fly (48.10) and 6th in the prelims of the 100 breast (56.68). He set best times in all of his races except for the 100 free.
Francis made huge strides in several of his events over this past season, clocking significant best times in all of his top events.

To make it to the ‘C’ final at this past season’s B1G Conference Championships, it took times of 19.73/43.48 in the 50/100 free, 48.38 in the 100 back, 54.87 in the 100 breast and 47.12 in the 100 fly. Francis would have landed in the ‘C’ final of the 50 free, giving him a chance to score some points for the Buckeyes, and would have been just outside the cutoff in most of his other top events.
Joining Francis in the pool this fall are Aidan Levine, Gherman Prudnikau, Rayburn Kohl, Austin Hickok, Ethan Reniewicki and Cooper Burt, who will all make for strong training partners over the next four years.
