Starting today, Syria increases electricity supply hours

The Syrian Minister of Energy, Mohammad al-Bashir, stated that the reality of electricity supply in Syria will witness a tangible improvement starting today, Monday, August 18, through adjustments to the rationing program, which will now be two hours on for every four hours off in most Syrian provinces.

He pointed out, during his interview with the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), that this improvement comes as a result of the arrival of quantities of Azerbaijani gas through Turkish territory to the power plants, which contributed to increasing the amount of electricity produced and raising the operational capacity of several stations that had been stopped or partially operating in the past period.

“The relative decrease in temperatures during the past days contributed to easing the pressure on the network, enabling the ministry to redistribute loads and improve distribution programs,” as he put it.

He confirmed that the ministry continues its efforts, in coordination with the relevant bodies, to ensure the stability of the electricity situation and achieve further improvement in the coming period.

He also called on citizens to rationalize electricity consumption and contribute to supporting network stability.

For his part, Ahmad al-Suleiman, Director of Government Communication at the Ministry of Energy, announced the actual start of implementing the increase in operating hours as of today, adding two hours of operation for every four hours of rationing.

He explained on his page on the “X” platform today that this measure comes within the plan to improve distribution and raise service efficiency.

During monitoring conducted by Enab Baladi, electricity supply hours in Damascus increased today, reaching between six and eight hours in various neighborhoods of the city, following an increase in rationing hours last week.

As for Rural Damascus, supply hours varied between its areas, ranging from four to six hours.

In Aleppo (northern Syria), Enab Baladi’s correspondent reported that in the last two days, electricity supply hours improved, reaching six hours, after having previously been only four.

    Reason for the delay

The Director of the Public Establishment for Electricity Transmission and Distribution, Khaled Abu Di, told Enab Baladi on August 9 that the reason for the delay in starting to increase electricity supply hours, contrary to what was previously announced, was due to the outcome of the discussions between the Syrian and Turkish technical teams regarding the pumping of Azerbaijani gas. Pumping operations had started experimentally and in limited quantities, reaching 750,000 cubic meters per day, out of the scheduled amount of 3.4 million cubic meters.

The purpose of the gradual pumping was to monitor pressure and conduct accurate balancing between the Syrian and Turkish networks, to avoid any potential technical problems and to address malfunctions if found, which required extending the trial period for about six days at that time, according to technical estimates.

Abu Di confirmed that the expected electricity supply will range between eight and ten hours daily and will cover all Syrian provinces.

He pointed out that the electricity quantities produced from gas will be fully allocated to cover household consumption, while the remaining loads (industrial and commercial) will be supplied through local generation dependent on domestic gas and fuel oil.

Electricity will be distributed among the provinces according to a studied program that takes into account the readiness of electrical networks, the number of subscribers, and the lengths of networks in each province.

3.4 million cubic meters of gas daily

The flow of Azerbaijani natural gas to Syria through Turkey began on August 2. Turkish Minister of Energy, Alparslan Bayraktar, said that electricity exports to Syria are carried out through eight different points, with export capacity expected to increase by 25% initially, and to more than double later.

The Director of the Syrian Gas Company, Youssef al-Youssef, told Enab Baladi at the time that Syria would receive 3.4 million cubic meters of gas per day from Azerbaijan through the Turkish side, and it would immediately enter the Syrian gas network. He noted that the quantities would be gradually introduced during the first week, after which the pumping would reach the announced stable supply rate.

The “Qatar Fund for Development” had announced the start of the second phase of support for electricity, based on the directives of the Emir of the State of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, within the framework of cooperation between the Qatar Fund for Development and the Syrian Ministry of Energy.

The Qatari embassy in Damascus stated in a press release on July 31 that this step comes “as a continuation of the State of Qatar’s efforts to support the brothers in the Syrian Arab Republic in the electricity sector.”
