Ohio State Names A Starter, No Decision For ND, Playoff Expansion, and Other Big Ten (& Notre Dame) Bullets

It’s officially game week! Well, not necessarily for the Big Ten, but this Saturday we get real, live, meaningful college football on our TVs. Football season is officially back! With that in mind, let’s get to a few quick hitters from over the weekend. One major program has made its starting quarterback decision, while another is keeping the race open. Plus, the Big Ten has reportedly been tossing around the idea of even more playoff expansion. Let’s get to today’s latest Big Ten news.

Big Ten Bullets

When the Ohio State Buckeyes’ offense takes the field for the first time this season against the Texas Longhorns on August 30th, it will be led by sophomore quarterback and former five-star recruit Julian Sayin. Ryan Day made the decision public on Monday morning after a back-and-forth camp battle between Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz. Sayin was expected to win the job heading into the offseason, and while the battle lingered longer than expected, the result was still the same. “Just win, baby, find a way to win. If it’s 14-13 or 65-64, we have to find a way to win….We aren’t going to worry about the what-ifs; we’re going to let this thing fly and find a way to be 1-0 after that Saturday night.” – Ohio State Head Coach Ryan Day on expectations for Julian Sayin. It will be fascinating to see how the Buckeyes’ offense looks in Week 1 against Texas in their Cotton Bowl rematch. Sayin obviously possesses a ton of talent, and the Buckeyes are always loaded with high-end skill players, none more notable than star wideout Jeremiah Smith. However, they’re replacing a lot of experience on that offense at just about every position group, and they’ll have a new playcaller this year in Brian Hartline, who’s doing that for the first time. And it’s not like they’ll be able to ease into things against a lesser opponent. While a loss in Week 1’s matchup doesn’t really hold as much weight in the playoff race as it would have in the past, it’s still going to be a really fun test for both title contenders. While Ohio State has named its starting quarterback, Notre Dame still has yet to make a decision on that front. The Irish open their season in 13 days on the road against Miami in a top-ten showdown at Hard Rock Stadium, and as of now, CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey are still going toe-to-toe in their battle to be the starting quarterback. Both Marcus Freeman and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock spoke after practice yesterday about the decision. We’re not as freaked out about the fact that somebody hasn’t been named the starting quarterback as a lot of people seem to be, but it’s because we know both individuals involved. We know how their teammates feel about them, care about them, trust them, and they both played really well…so, we’re gonna figure this thing out and get the information out there when coach Freeman decides it’s time to make it out.” – Mike Denbrock, Notre Dame Offensive Coordinator. I’ve got to make a decision, but I will take into account the, like I do all my decisions, the coaches, and then we’ll tell the players and we’ll move forward…It’s about decision-making. Because there’s so many different aspects that go into the outcome of a play, I always say it, we’ll give the quarterback credit when things are good, we’ll blame him if things are bad. But the one thing they control is their decision-making and the ability to get everybody on the same page.” – Marcus Freeman on the Notre Dame quarterback battle. While Notre Dame is still making their quarterback decision, one of their former QBs has officially earned a starting job. Steve Angeli, who backed up Riley Leonard last season and led a scoring drive in the Orange Bowl against Penn State, has been named the starter at Syracuse. Angeli transferred this offseason after the writing was on the wall that the Irish were ready to turn the program over to either Carr or Minchey. Late last week, news surfaced that the Big Ten was in the very early stages of angling for a larger College Football Playoff, expanding to 24 or 28 teams. Look, I love that College Football has a playoff system now. It’s certainly better than letting a computer formula decide the two best teams in the country. But, like, do we really need that many teams? Last year, we had people complaining that round one games weren’t competitive enough, and we had 12 teams in last year’s playoff. Now we want to more than double that total? WHOA! Big Ten Reportedly Floats Plans For 28-Team College Football Playoff The Big Ten’s rumored expansion plan would include seven auto bids for the Big Ten and SEC. Do we really need to see that after? Especially after last year’s playoff already drew criticisms of not being competitive enough early? I love college football. It’s my favorite sport. But maybe let’s start using a little more common sense instead of trying to change things up every year. A 28-team playoff just isn’t it, not right now at least.
