Chicago Cubs Lineup (Game 1): Owen Caissie Gets the Start

CUBS LINEUP — Five games in four days against the Brewers at Wrigley Field, and it all starts today at Wrigley Field with a doubleheader. Will this week be fun? Will it be a nightmare? Tune in to find out! And in the meantime, here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the early game against Freddy Peralta and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Michael Busch, 1B Kyle Tucker, RF Seiya Suzuki, DH Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Carson Kelly, C Owen Caissie, LF Nico Hoerner, SS Willi Castro, 2B Matt Shaw, 3B

Well, here’s one piece of good news: With Owen Caissie in Chicago and Willi Castro added at the deadline, the Cubs are SO much more able to handle two games in one day without burning everyone out. And, indeed, both of those two players are starting in Game 1 against the Brewers.

Owen Caissie takes over left field for Ian Happ, who’ll sit out this first one. And Willi Castro takes over second for Nico Hoerner, who is otherwise giving Dansby Swanson a short rest.

Meanwhile, Carson Kelly is behind the plate, and Seiya Suzuki is at DH.

If I had to guess, I’d say this means in Game 2, we’ll get Suzuki in right with Tucker at DH, as well as Ian Happ back in left and Reese McGuire behind the plate. I’m not quite sure if Castro will sit in that one (he might play for Nico Hoerner or Matt Shaw), as the Cubs look to get an extra lefty for that game.

Speaking of which, with these substitutions, the Cubs are getting only one extra left-handed bat in the lineup this afternoon (Owen Caissie for Dansby Swanson), as both Happ and Castro are switch-hitters. That’s not much of a concern, though, as Freddy Peralta is pretty tough on all types of hitters.

By contrast, the Brewers’ (probable) second starter today, Chad Patrick, does have significant lefty/righty splits, so getting McGuire in for that one (and maybe also finding a way to keep Castro) makes more sense.

These doubleheader lineups are always two games’ worth of considerations in one.

    Milwaukee Brewers Lineup:

Brice Turang, 2B Caleb Durbin, 3B William Contreras, DH Christian Yelich, LF Andrew Vaughn, 1B Blake Perkins, CF Sal Frelick, RF Danny Jansen, C Joey Ortiz, SS

    Pitching Matchup:

    Chicago Cubs: Cade Horton, RHP

Cade Horton’s scoreless streak finally came to an end his last time out, but it was just one earned run in 5.2 IP and it happened after he left the game. Moreover, it was against a scorching hot Blue Jays offense in Toronto and STILL featured a career-best 8 strikeouts. To put it simply, Horton has been locked in of late and it would be super awesome if that doesn’t have to end today of all days.

    His last five starts: 28.1 IP, 11H, 1ER, 9BB, 24 Ks.

Today might also be a good day for Horton’s longest start. At least, that’s what you hope for any starting pitcher at the beginning of a doubleheader/long series. The Cubs will get an extra arm today, but still.

Horton has not yet faced the Brewers this season.

    Milwaukee Brewers: Freddy Peralta, RHP

In terms of results, Freddy Peralta is having as good of a season as ever, and that says a lot for a guy with his resume: 2.90 ERA over 25 starts and 136.2 IP. And while his strikeout rate is a little bit down from its usual height, he’s still whiffing a ton of batters (26.1 K%) without overdoing it on the walks (8.8%) or allowing too many barrels (8.6%).

Of course, it’s tough to allow many barrels when you have just a 33.3% hard-hit rate (5th best in MLB).

But the Brewers have nothing but great pitchers right now, so the Cubs lineup will just have to figure it out. There are no breaks coming this week.

On the bright side, the Cubs have faced Peralta three times already this season, and it looks like they got better every time:

    May 4: 6.0 IP, 4H, 0ER, 1BB, 7KJune 19: 5.0 IP, 2H, 3ER, 2BB, 6KJuly 30: 4.0 IP, 5H, 5ER, 4BB, 3K

Oh what I would give for a repeat of that July 30 game.
