Eye makeup can become a challenge as we age and the skin around the eyes naturally loses elasticity and collagen. The methods we used to love in our 20s and 30s may not look right anymore, but how do we shift?
If your eyes are changing, and you have fine lines and crepey lids, it's normal! But instead of swearing off eye makeup altogether, there's some great techniques that makeup artists—who are themselves over 50—recommend.
We've already discussed how to do eye shadow on a hooded lid, but there's another trick to try too: tightlining.

It may take a bit of practice to master, but tightlining can open the eyes and make them look bigger and brighter.
If you have hooded eyelids, lining the tops of your eyelashes can emphasize the hood, so tightlining, or moving the liner down into the lashes and waterline, can free up more lid space.
Tightlining is also called "invisible eyeliner" and has two types: one is smudging eyeliner into the roots of your eyelashes. The other is lining your waterline (the rim of your eyelid where it meets your eyeball). You can do one or the other or both, and you can do this on the top and bottom lash lines if you like. But, many 50+ beauty experts recommend doing the top lash line only. Why not play with all of the options and see what looks best on you? Everyone's eye shape and eyelids are different.
Kat James, a professional makeup artist, says "the beauty of this technique, especially if you're a more mature woman, is you're not ... applying liner on crepey lids."

Tightlining Tips
Use a magnification mirror and look down into it to avoid poking your eye, says professional makeup artist Michelle Spieler.Use a waterproof pencil with a thin, soft tip, says Erica Taylor. This is a very sensitive area, so you don't want a hard and pointy pencil that can pull and cause the eyes to water. If you get really good at the technique, you could also do it with a waterproof gel liner and a brush, but that method is a bit more advanced.Consider using a brown or plum shade instead of black. Black can emphasize drooping and be less forgiving if you make mistakes. But if black is flattering on you, then go for it!Curl your lashes before tightlining if you're having trouble finding the line where your lashes and eyelid meet. Apply mascara to finish the look!Related: Up Next:
