The Bills dropped their second preseason game 38-0 to the Bears.
Game Recap
First Quarter
CHICAGO’S FIRST DRIVE-The Bears got the ball to start the contest and faced very little resistance early. Caleb Williams found tight end Colston Loveland for eight yards, then his other tight end, Cole Kmet, for 29 more. Chicago then ran the ball once for six yards before being sent back 10 yards thanks to a holding call. It didn’t really matter, however, as the Bears went right back to Loveland for another 18 yards. The Bills again slowed the Chicago attack, forcing a 3rd & 5, but once more, the Bears sliced through Buffalo’s backup defense with a 36-yard catch and run to Olamide Zaccheaus to open the scoring at 7-0.
BUFFALO’S FIRST DRIVE-The Bills offense offered no response on their first drive and picked up a grand total of one yard and two false start penalties before punting the ball away on 4th & 19.
CHICAGO’S SECOND DRIVE-On their second drive, Chicago’s offense once again got the ball rolling early. Gains of two and three before a nine-yard pass to DJ Moore set the Bears up with a 1st & 10 at their own 38-yard line. But this time, Caleb Williams fired three straight incompletions as Buffalo’s defense got off the field for the first time in the game.
BUFFALO’S SECOND DRIVE-Mike White got the start over Mitch Trubisky in Sunday’s game and after completing one two-yard on drive one, the fifth-year veteran fired a deep comeback route to Tyrell Shavers who hauled in the 22-yard pass. That was the only Bills highlight of their second drive, punting the ball after crossing midfield.
Second Quarter
CHICAGO’S THIRD DRIVE-The Bears pulled their offensive starters on drive number three–a drive that started with three-straight Brittain Brown runs, adding up to 22 yards. Chicago’s backup passer, Tyson Bagent then got to throw for the first time all game–a 22-yard shot to Luther Burden. The Bears’ attack then slowed, an incomplete pass, a run for a loss, and an eight-yard catch and run to set up fourth down. The Bears went for it on 4th & 3 from Buffalo’s 35-yard line, and Maurice Alexander took a short pass for 18 yards and a first. As the drive continued, the Bears kept marching. Gains of eight, three, and five put them at the goal line and Brown got in for six as Chicago’s lead doubled, 14-0.
BUFFALO’S THIRD DRIVE-Up to this point, the Bills had 33 yards of offense through two drives. After their third time on the field, they ended up with just 28, losing five yards on three plays–an incompletion, a one-yard run, and a sack as punter Brad Robbins ran onto the field for the third time.
CHICAGO’S FOURTH DRIVE-The Bears’ offensive onslaught continued. Starting on their own 39-yard line, Bagent went to Tyler Scott for a gain of 35. Once in the redzone, Chicago converted a 3rd & 6, and one play later, Bagent found Scott again in the back of the end zone for six. Bears take a 21-0 lead.
BUFFALO’S FOURTH DRIVE-Chicago’s fourth drive of the game was an encapsulation of their offense’s day–Five yards, 61 yards, opportunistic chunk plays, and capitalizing on defensive mistakes. Buffalo’s response was somehow their worst effort of the day. For their second-straight drive, the Bills lost yards–Frank Gore Jr. runs of two and three yards got it started by White was sacked again–this time for 11 yards.
CHICAGO’S FIFTH DRIVE-Chunk plays were once again the Bears’ bread and butter–Bagent to Burden, 21 yards. Bagent to Samori Toure, 23 yards. Bagent to Miles Boykin, 11 yards. Those three plays coupled with Ian Wheeler runs of four, six, three, and nine yards pushed Chicago inside Buffalo’s 10-yard line quite easily. There, the Bears faced their first pause since the first quarter. Wheeler went for gains of two and four before the two-minute warning sounded. Afterward, Wheeler was stopped at the goal line, forcing a 4th & Goal attempt. Chicago picked back up where they started and punched it in again. Chicago-28, Buffalo-zilch.
BUFFALO’S FIFTH DRIVE-More of the same. One 25-yard shot to Kristian Wilkerson before a couple of penalties and three incompletions.
CHICAGO’S SIXTH DRIVE-Eight plays, 18 yards. On 4th & 7, Bagent tried to extend a play as the half neared its close, but the backup QB was sacked, giving Buffalo the ball back with five seconds to go at Chicago’s 38-yard line–Buffalo’s best chance so far to get on the board.
BUFFALO’S SIXTH DRIVE-The Bills’ backup kicker Caden Davis missed a 56-yarder wide right to close out the first half.
Third Quarter
BUFFALO’S SEVENTH DRIVE-For the first time in the game, Mitch Trubisky took the field and the Bills offense moved the ball early with gains of 12 and 13 yards. After the early success, however, came back-to-back offensive penalties to force 1st & 30. Buffalo actually did pick it up thanks to a 3rd & 18 pass interference call, but it was all for naught as the drive stalled on a 4th & 8 incomplete pass at Chicago’s 38-yard line.
CHICAGO’S SEVENTH DRIVE-Bagent’s success continued into the second half as Chicago capitalized on a roughing the passer call to get deep into Bills territory and kick the first successful field goal of the contest.
BUFFALO’S EIGHTH DRIVE-A three-and-out for Trubisky and co.
CHICAGO’S EIGHTH DRIVE-A three-and-out for Bagent and co.
BUFFALO’S NINTH DRIVE-Frank Gore Jr.’s relatively successful day, 11 touches for 71 yards, came to a screeching halt as did Buffalo’s most promising drive. The second-year back lost the ball inside Chicago’s 20-yard line to flip possession back to the Bears.
