Two people are dead after a motorcyclist ran a red light at an estimated speed of more than 100 mph, causing a fiery collision that involved five vehicles.
About 9:30 p.m. Friday, police responded to the crash at the intersection of 10th Street and 35th Avenue in Greeley. The motorcyclist was traveling west on 10th Street, entering the intersection on a red light and colliding with a southbound vehicle on 35th Avenue, according to a news release from the Greeley Police Department.
The initial impact sparked a fire. After emergency personnel extinguished the flames, the 19-year-old man driving the southbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcyclist was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Law enforcement officials are working to identify the motorcyclist and notify next of kin.
After next of kin are notified, the Weld County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the deceased.
“The Greeley Police Department would like to thank the Greeley Fire Department and City Streets Department for their swift response. Their rapid action saved the lives of multiple victims,” the department wrote in its release.
Police are not yet sure whether alcohol or substances were a factor, as the investigation continues.
