IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. – Ukrainians at Irondequoit’s Ukrainian Festival are feeling cautious and deeply skeptical that President Trump can work with Vladimir Putin to bring an end to the war in their homeland.

“I don’t believe there can be any agreement with the terrorist,” one festival attendee said.

Ukrainians at the festival want a peace deal to be reached without Ukraine giving up any territory.

“I want to pray for this,” another attendee said.

“The land has specific meaning and sense for Ukrainians it’s not just the land the piece of territory, this is something from the heart,” they added.

Oleksandra Zakharchyshyn agrees the territory should be off the table.

“There’s thousands of civilians and soldiers who died because of that and giving up that land is not just unfair to the families of those victims, its unconstitutional as Zelensky mentioned,” Zakharchyshyn said.

Tatyana Boverlyak says it may be best that the summit was between only Trump and Putin, and that President Zelenskyy wasn’t there.

“Its very emotional for President Zelensky to hold himself and literally not to kill Putin,” Boverlyak said.

Melissa Sydor is with the Ukrainian organization “RocMaidan.” She doesn’t trust the motives of Putin and Trump.

“It dangerous to have Russia and the United States make a decision about a country without them even at the table,” Sydor said.

Roman Misula, Vice President of the Ukrainian Cultural Center, says to look at the past for a warning that there is no appeasing Putin.

“We are familiar with his tactics of prolonging the conficts,” Misula said. “Certainly we don’t feel he is the most trustworthy person in a negotiation.”

Trump and Putin didn’t reach a deal on a ceasefire Friday, and there’s no word yet on whether another meeting will take place.
