Following a busy offseason that saw much roster turnover, Phoenix Mercury guard Kahleah Copper has embraced a new era the team is experiencing this year.
“It’s a good mixture of veterans and lots of new players,” Copper said on Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta on Friday. “A lot of our new players are underestimated so I love that they have come in and made an immediate impact. I love the vets we have and we’ve continued to be great leaders and do what we do best.”
The Mercury entered 2025 after an offseason that saw several additions and departures, including Diana Taurasi retiring, Brittney Griner leaving in free agency and the team acquiring Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas as part of a four-team deal that sent fan-favorite Sophie Cunningham to the Indiana Fever.

Copper credits the addition of veteran DeWanna Bonner to the team’s success this season, saying she’s been a great teammate and brings more leadership to the locker room.
“She’s a winner with championship experience and just another leader in her own way,” Copper said. “She didn’t come here with any expectations for herself, but she just came here to do whatever she needed to for the team’s success and I think that’s very underrated.”
Kahleah Copper overcoming adversity this season
Copper’s 2025 season has gotten off to a rocky start after the four-time All-Star missed the first 11 games due to left knee surgery. Copper also missed time in July with a hamstring injury.
Copper, who has been largely healthy throughout her 10-year career, said it was hard to miss significant time at the start of the season but credits her team for helping her get through it.
“It was tough mentally and physically. I never experienced an injury in my career so for it to hit me now, it was tough,” Copper said. “Our support staff has been great and our culture and my teammates have been great in helping me navigate through that and just being able to get back out there and doing whatever I can to help the team’s success.”
Despite Copper’s time on the shelf, the Mercury (19-13) have the fourth-best record in the WNBA with 12 games left in the regular season.
After dropping a close contest to the Las Vegas Aces on Friday, the Mercury meet the Storm in Seattle on Sunday. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. MST.
