Tim Sullivan wanted to ask his girlfriend, Caroline Liggett, a very important question — and he did it without saying a word.
From a helicopter high in the sky, Sullivan and Liggett looked out over a 13-acre corn maze outside Columbus, Ohio, in which a message had been etched.
“Will you marry me, Caroline?” the field below asked.
“I was just so shocked,” Liggett said about the gesture.
Sullivan and Liggett, who both work in agriculture, have known for months they want to spend their lives together, but Sullivan was stuck on how to ask.
“We both really like corn a lot, not to be corny,” Sullivan said. “I wanted to do something that we would both be able to remember for the rest of our lives.”
Tim Sullivan’s marriage proposal cut into a 13-acre corn maze.He came up with an idea in April: He would propose during his family farm’s annual corn maze. With help from computers and consultants, Sullivan designed and planted the maze.
Then, he waited for the message to grow.
“Tim is quite the planner, so I knew it was going to be something quite elaborate,” Liggett said. “I had quite a bit of patience.”
Finally, this month, the two made the flight over the farm.
“I looked back at her and she’s looking out the other side of the plane,” so the pilot circled back, and “I’ve never seen her face light up as much as she did,” Sullivan said.

“It was definitely one of the coolest experiences that we’ll be able to tell for all time,” Sullivan said.
When they landed, Sullivan was sure to get down on one knee, offering his new fiancée a traditional proposal.
