University of Rochester welcomes 104 future doctors, chosen from over 5,000 applicants

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – More than 100 new medical students started their training at the University of Rochester this week. They got their white coats in a special ceremony on Friday.

The future doctors come from across the country and while many of them will likely return to their hometowns or other cities when the graduate from medical school, the hope is that some will choose to stay and help serve our community.

One by one, with their families looking on, 104 medical students walked across the stage to get their white coats on Friday.

Among them was Faith Allen, a graduate of Spencerport High School who actually participated in STEM programs put on by the University of Rochester as a kid. “I was able to work with the med students so, it’s crazy that it’s like, now that’s me. I was able to see what I’m going to get myself into,” she told News10NBC.

Lucy Kaffenbarger’s mother and grandfather are doctors in upstate New York and what she saw them do during the pandemic inspired her to choose the same path. “My mom, being a palliative care doctor, I got to see the work that she was doing was really important and I got to see the difference she made in a lot of people’s lives,” Kaffenbarger told News10NBC.

Neal Dogra was similarly motivated by his father, “he was essentially putting himself on the front line and yea that was scary as his son but it was also so inspiring to know that this is a career you’re choosing that is truly going to matter,” says Dogra, a URMC medical student from Milwaukee.

Inside the pocket of each white coat was a message from a doctor who graduated from the University of Rochester’s medical school.

“One of the things the University of Rochester really empathizes that as a doctor, it’s your job to advocate for the policies that matter, I don’t know what the future is going to look like, nobody does with AI, with changing policies, with the changing landscape in the world as a whole, but again what better place to be than on the front lines of that change,” says Dogra.

While she still has to get through the next four years of intense training, Kaffenbarger’s interested in family medicine, which is a field where doctors are desperately needed. “I definitely think it’s been a lot of seeing my family growing up and how impactful they’ve been on the community, it’s just something that I value a lot, it’s something that I’m definitely keeping an eye on,” she says.

This is the 100th anniversary of the University of Rochester’s medical school. That first class, 100 years ago had just 22 students. The 104 medical students in this year’s class were chosen out of more than 5,000 applicants.
