PERINTON, N.Y. – Friday marked 80 years since the end of World War II. The VFW Post 8495 in Perinton celebrated the occasion with a special event featuring a musical performance and speakers.
Organizers aimed to ensure the sacrifices of World War II heroes are never forgotten.
“No parade could end the battle some carried inside for the rest of their lives. And yet our heroes return victorious,” said Mike Cialini, the Post Commander. “When I say these men and women literally saved the world from evil and tyranny, it’s not an overstatement. They carried the weight of freedom on their backs, they answered the call turning uncommon valor to common virtue.”
Japan formally surrendered on Sept. 2, 1945, but many Americans mark Aug. 15 as the war’s end because that was the day Japan first surrendered unconditionally.
