Parts of Lower Wacker Drive in downtown Chicago were closed early Friday morning after a two-vehicle crash left a teenager killed and another hospitalized, with one car mangled and destroyed as police worked to investigate.
The crash happened about 11:30 p.m. on Lower Wacker Drive between Clark and Dearborn Streets, police said. As of 5:30 a.m., road closures between Clark and Dearborn were in both directions, NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin said.
According to authorities, a 56-year-old man was driving a red SUV westbound on Lower Wacker Drive with a 19-year-old passenger when it attempted to make a lefthand turn. The SUV was then struck by a black sedan heading eastbound, driven by a 19-year-old male that disobeyed a red traffic light.
A 19-year-old female passenger in the sedan sustained trauma to the body and was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said. The 19-year-old driver of the sedan also sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was last listed in fair condition.
The driver and passenger of the SUV were not injured and refused medical treatment at the scene.
Photos and video from the crash show a smashed black sedan, with a shattered windshield and torn-off car doors and tires. Evidence technicians blocked off the area with yellow police tape as they worked to investigate.
No one was in custody, and no citations were issued, police said.
